Thomas M. Balk Jr.

Thomas Melvin Balk, Jr., 64, of Collierville, Tennessee a Director of Administration for the ServiceMaster Company, died September 26, 2011 at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. His family will receive guests on Wednesday, September 28 from 5PM – 8PM at Memphis Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens located at 5599 Poplar Avenue, Memphis, TN 38119. Funeral services by Sax – Tiedemann Funeral Home will be held in Chicago, IL on Saturday, October 1 with burial in Acacia Cemetery. Tom was a decorated Vietnam Veteran from 1966 – 1969 including the Vietnamese Service Medal with three Bronze Stars and the Purple Heart with two stars. He worked for the U.S. Postal service from 1969 – 1979. He managed contracts for ServiceMaster from 1979 into the 1990’s for a variety of Chicago area hospitals. He handled the corporate facilities in Downer’s Gove, IL and later the entire Memphis portfolio of properties for the corporate campus in Memphis, TN. Mr. Balk is survived by his three sons David Conrad Balk, Christopher Thomas (Jenny) Balk and Michael Stephen Balk all of McHenry, IL, brother Donald Balk , two sisters Leslie Keller and Linnea Karpenske, and four grandchildren Emily, Edwin, Stephen and Matthew.
