Winfred Hall Morgan, 69, died Thursday, June 16, 2022 following a brief, but hard-fought illness, in Memphis, TN. Wink was born April 4, 1953 in Lucedale, MS to Sidney and Audrey Mae Morgan, the beloved baby of the family. After graduating from George County High School, he went on to pursue his B.S. at Mississippi State University and law degree at the University of Mississippi, which led to a 40-year law career. Most recently, he served as Director of Legal Real Estate at AutoZone in Memphis.
Ever the Bulldog, Wink was happiest at a tailgate or watching Mississippi State with his family. Then again, he was also at his saddest watching the Dawgs, as there was a lot of disappointment through the years. He will be remembered for his winning grin and colorful stories that often brought him to tears of laughter. He thought he was pretty funny, and he was right. He was a voracious reader, a baby-whisperer, and a stand-up friend. Wink was also a tequila man, but he styled his signature mustache with a gin & tonic-scented wax. He kept us on our toes that way.
Wink was above all a loving and dedicated husband and father. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Mary Beth Morgan, their children Maggie Morgan-Smith (Austin), J.D. Morgan (Emily), John Hall Morgan (Natalie), and Madeline Calcaterra (James), and grandchildren, Nora Smith, Elliott Calcaterra, and Evelyn Morgan. He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Peggy Kehoe, his siblings Elaine Cooley, Eloise Felty (Johnny), Evelyn Allen (Connie), Ann Watts (Pat), Len Morgan (Christine), numerous nieces and nephews who lovingly referred to him as “Uncle Winky,” and more friends than he could count.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Tuesday, June 21 from 2:00 until 4:00 PM at Wiseacre Brewery on Broad Avenue, Memphis. A reception will follow at the Country Club Tower, 585 S. Greer Unit 200, Memphis, TN 38111. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Mississippi State University’s Compass Scholarship Fund in his name.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.MemphisFuneralPoplar.com for the Morgan family.
