Darlene Sherry was born in Washington on March 25, 1935 to Ralph and Myrl Britton. She passed away on July 5, 2024 in Hemet, California at age 89. She had a wonderful life filled with love, adventure, and her family.
Darlene attended Gladstone Elementary School and Gresham High School in Oregon. She played volleyball and loved sports, and she was also in the choir. She lived during WWII and went from no TV, to not being able to operate her smart TV!
When her father was drafted into the Navy, Darlene and her mother lived with her grandparents on their farm. Her grandparents took her to the Friends Church where her grandfather was the pastor, and this is when she accepted Christ in her early years.
Later her parents divorced, and she went to a home for about 10 years and lived with a meticulous woman named Mrs. Blount who continued taking her to church. This is where she learned how to fold so neatly and clean so well.
In high school Darlene moved back home with her mom. She learned shorthand and could do 100 words per minute. After graduation she had a job at the welfare department and later, she learned accounting skills and had jobs doing this.
Darlene met and married a navy man, Michael David Sherry. They raised four children: Darnell, D’Anne, Michael, and Pamela. She held down the fort while her husband was in the Navy and gone on many long cruises. They moved many places, including Alaska. But her favorite places to live were San Diego and Idyllwild, California.
It was in Idyllwild that she and her husband returned to their Christian faith at the local Presbyterian Church, and they were very involved in the community. She was Rotary Ann President as well. They loved their dog Gretchen that they got as a puppy in Idyllwild. They had several homes built in Idyllwild over the years.
Mrs. Sherry was widowed young at age 50 and she devoted her life to her children and grandchildren. She was blessed with 12 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband and son.
In her final years, she had dementia, and we enjoyed her sundowners and many stories from her childhood. She also had an emotion support curler---we all knew about. She loved Andrea Bocelli as well.
We will miss you Mama, Grandma Sherry… Thank you for your generosity and loving kindness. We could not have had a better Mother.
