Janice Lucille Tuskewicz passed away peacefully in her sleep on Saturday, March 21, 2026.
Jan, as she was known to her family and friends, was born on January 12, 1934 in Carbondale, Pennsylvania. She was the oldest of the 6 children of Albert W. Scheer Sr. and Iva (Eggleton) Scheer. As a little girl, her family lived in Middletown and Newburgh, New York where her father worked with her grandfather Alpheus B. Scheer, operating several coal delivery businesses. In 1945, the family bought a small dairy farm outside of Norwich, N.Y. where she lived until her marriage to Ernest Tuskewicz, a WW2 veteran, in 1954. In 1957, Jan and Ernie left upstate New York with their two small sons Richard and William (Bill) and came out to California and eventually settled in Inglewood. In 1958, their third son John was born.
Jan worked for the U.S. Postal Service in Inglewood for many years. She later moved back to New York, where she worked as a caregiver for mentally disabled patients in a group home operated by the state in Walton, New York. After retiring in 1996, she and Ernie moved back to California and settled in Sun City. She lived there with her husband, and after his passing, by herself for many years until her failing health required her to move into her son Richard’s home.
Jan was a very social person, always active in many groups. As a young mother, she was involved with the local PTA and also her three boys Little League organizations. She insisted her sons attend the Lutheran Church with her, where she always volunteered when called upon. In her later years, living in Sun City, she volunteered once a week to help in the kitchen at the Riverside County senior center.
Jan had several different interests that she enjoyed. She loved to cook and loved to travel, both activities that she did until she was no longer able to. She was also an avid reader and a lifelong movie buff. Her time in Sun City allowed her to participate in several clubs and also use the community swimming pool, which she would visit on a daily basis in the summer. Her favorite club that she stayed active with until she had to leave Sun City was TOPS- which she would tell everyone that she met- stands for Taking Off Pounds Sensibly. She was very active with them and had many dear friends that she met as a member. She would always say how much she enjoyed belonging to TOPS.
Jan is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Richard and Pam Tuskewicz, and her daughter-in-law Yolanda Tuskewicz. She is also survived by her brother and his wife Albert and Marlene Scheer, her sisters Carole Nisbet and Georgiana Leahy and her sister-in-law Diane Scheer. Also, her 4 grandchildren; Nick, Dana, Tina and John Henry and 6 great-grandchildren.
Jan was predeceased by her husband Ernie and two of her sons, Bill and John. Also, her sister Ruth Markiewicz and brother Richard Scheer.
No service is planned at this tim.
