Lucila was a people-person and enjoyed the company of her relatives and friends, whenever possible. Born in 1937, on the 1st of February - in Ruiz, Nayarit, Mexico to Maria Luisa Tirado Borrego of San Vicente, Nayarit, and Ignacio Ross Borrego of Estacion Don, Sonora. She was the 3rd oldest of nine children. Her father, Ignacio, was a train station supervisor for Southern Pacific Railway (Mexico) and often relocated from one train station to another with the entire family, between the states of Sinaloa, Nayarit & Jalisco. Her mother, Luisa, was a housewife, raising all their children.
From a young age, Lucila was a dedicated student and always received top grades in school. She especially liked courses related to home economics, such as sewing, cooking, and crafting. Much so, that after graduating from high school, she went on to become a home economics teacher for the next six years.
From an early age and in their small town, her future husband, Maximiano “Chimo” Estrella Patiño, was a childhood acquaintance, who later began to work for her father, Ignacio, as a delivery driver. As friends, Lucila and Max would go out dancing twice a week, which later developed into a romantic attraction. Max attributes having learned to become a better dancer to her. At their age of 20, Max asked Lucila to become his girlfriend and she happily accepted. He then asked for Ignacio’s approval, to which he approved.
In 1960, Max immigrated to California, with the vision of joining most of his family that was already there, and to eventually begin a new life with his future wife, Lucila. Lucila did not send him away without giving him a laminated photograph of herself to remind him of her and keep him company. Max soon obtained a job and then purchased their first home in Compton, CA. In 1962, Max returned to Mexico, where he then proposed marriage to Lucila, and she again happily accepted. Max returned to his job in California until he returned to Mexico two years later, in January 1964, and married Lucila. That same month, they both left for California; however, Lucila was denied a visa to enter and had to wait in Mexicali without Max until May, when she was approved for immigration.
From the very beginning, Max told Lucila that he did not want her to have a job but rather stay at home and raise their children and she agreed. Over the course of the next 14 years, Lucila gave birth to Ignacio Manuel, Eduardo, Miguel Angel, and Antonio. She raised her boys with love and devotion.
Lucila was known to be very crafty; making things such as potholders, slippers knitted from yarn, quilts, and table coverings to name a few. She was also known to bake cookies and decorate cakes. And she also liked to listen to music and loved to dance with her husband, Max, throughout their entire relationship.
Lucila was a devote spouse, mother, and grandmother (Britny+, Brenda, Eduardo, Jessica, Adriana, Michael, and Matthew). She was unable to spend much time with her great grandchildren (Matix, Kayden, and Tatum), due to her illness and covid restrictions during recent times. She held her parents, siblings, and each of her extended family of ‘n-laws, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends in high regard. Lucila was also a devote Catholic who could always be found praying in bed nightly, often for a few hours before bedtime.
In October 2014, Lucila became ill and was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. She became bed-ridden, requiring intubation and living with the assistance of a ventilator for the rest of her life. During almost ten years, she resided at five different care facilities in the Inland Empire when she wasn’t at the hospital. Max visited her almost daily (an average of 5-6 days a week), at every facility she was at, during this entire time.
On January 12, 2024, Lucila and Max would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.
No truer words can be said about this matrimony, “In sickness and in health, until death do us part.”
Lucila is survived by her husband, Max Patiño; her four sons, Ignacio(Luz), Eduardo, Miguel & Antonio(Estela); her seven grandchildren Britny(+), Brenda, Eduardo, Jessica , Adriana, Michael & Matthew; and three great grandchildren, Matix, Kayden & Tatum.
