Allen “Butch” Sietsema passed away peacefully in his home on March 11, 2026, after a long illness surrounded by family. He was known for strength, deep community ties, and dedication to family and friends. Allen was a beloved member of his family and community, and was especially cherished by his wife, Shirley.
Born in San Francisco and raised in Winton, Allen graduated from Atwater High School class of 1971. During his early years he worked on his uncle’s farm and in his parent’s retail business, Mello’s Department Store, before earning a bachelor’s degree in psychology from UC Davis in 1976. Following graduation, Allen took a months-long tour of several states and national parks in his famed 1960’s Volkswagen bug.
After taking his time to graduate college and road trip, Allen shifted his gaze to career and future. In his first career, Allen worked at Rogers Foods in Livingston for over 25 years. During his tenure, Allen met Shirley, whom would thereafter be the apple of his eye. Allen and Shirley built a life together filled with travel, family, and friends, all the while supporting each other in pursuing significant personal accomplishments.
Allen eventually pivoted to real estate, where he meticulously curated every deal for every client. Allen started at Gonella Realty, then opened his own RE/MAX Excellence franchise in 2010, and ultimately his own firm, AGS Real Estate in 2019. Allen joined the Merced County Association of Realtors in September 2004, where he brought a steady, thoughtful presence to his many posts. Among his numerous accolades and achievements, Allen was recognized with the Bill Del Nero Lifetime Achievement Award from the association in December 2025.
Continuing on the legacy of his father, Allen joined the Merced Breakfast Lions Club in October 2005, an organization he faithfully served until his passing. Allen was a loyal member who generously offered his time, mentorship, and magnanimous support. Allen was acknowledged with several distinguished awards and positions, culminating in being honored with a Life Membership of The International Association of Lions Clubs in June 2025.
Shirley became ill with cancer in 2023 and Allen valiantly cared for her until her passing in 2024. Allen was passionate about gardening and lamented every Oakland Raiders’ loss. Allen admired countless earthly splendors, and was especially fond of Yosemite, the Dolomites and the plains of Africa. Allen found purpose later in life at Cornerstone Church in Chowchilla where he led a grief Bible study group and served as usher.
Allen is survived by his mother Agnes Sietsema, sister Laurie Arzamendi (Gary), step-sons Tom McGuire (Kim) and Jeff Bobbett (Christine), seven grandchildren Aaron, Jeffrey, Kayla, Michelle, Amanda, Kristen and Kaitlyn, ten great grandchildren River, Leah, Ripley, Geordi, Brody, Alessio, Charles, Allegra, Aurelien, and Alana, nieces Janelle and Jesslyn, and nephew Elijah. Allen is preceded in death by his father Allen George Sietsema, Sr. and wife Shirley Sietsema. The family wishes to express sincere gratitude for the support offered by Allen’s friends during his illness, an incalculable service and gift.
Celebration of Life to be held Saturday, March 28, 2026, 11:00 am at Cornerstone Community Church, Chowchilla. Those wishing to commemorate Allen’s life well-lived may consider a contribution to the Allen & Shirley Sietsema Education Scholarship, administered by the Merced Breakfast Lions Club.
