Barbara V. Avila

December 4, 1941 ~ July 18, 2011

Barbara Avila was born December 4, 1941 in Mexico, to Gumesindo and Luz Valtierra. She passed July 18, 2011 at her home in Merced, California at the age of 69.

Barbara had a cheerful spirit and was always willing to help others. She knew no strangers as her home and heart was open to everyone. Those that knew Barbara will remember her for her wonderful meals and homemade tortillas. Barbara enjoyed spending time with her children, family, close friends and especially her grandchildren. She graduated from Merced High School in 1960 and began her career in nursing shortly after. Barbara was also a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints for 44 years.

Preceding Barbara in death was her husband Fred Avila, her brother Juan Valtierra a casualty of the Vietnam War, and her father Gumesindo Valtierra.

Barbara is survived by her children, Genaro (Dani) Avila, Rubio (Sandy Williams) Avila, Johnny (Jennifer) Avila, Tony (Lisa) Avila and Carlos Avila all of Merced, California; and her mother Luz Valtierra of Merced. She leaves brothers Gume Valtierra of Merced, Alfonso Valtierra of Stockton and Joe Valtierra of Merced. Barbara will be greatly missed by her grandchildren, Genaro R. Avila, RoseAnne Johnson, Evonne (Monkey) Noreiga, Anthony Avila, Melissa Avila, Rubio Avila Jr. Jacob Avila, Allison Gallardo, Lucas and Brandon Avila and great-granddaughter Ariel Noriega.

Visitation will be Wednesday, July 27, 2011 from 3:00-9:00 p.m. at Stratford Evans Merced Funeral Home, 1490 B Street, Merced, California 95340. The Funeral will be Thursday July 28, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 1108 Yosemite Avenue, Merced, California 95340
