

Ben Howard was born on August 22, 1928, and passed away on December 14, 2023, at the age of 95. Ben was born to Alpha and Alice Howard in Ness County, Kansas. He was the youngest of 6 children with 4 sisters and a brother.
Ben was brought up on farms in Western Kansas and graduated from Ness City High School in 1947. He was active in school sports, including Track and Football. In his senior year, he was Captain of his football team. After a year of college, he enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1948. Ben served with distinction for 20 years. He served overseas for two tours, including England and Thailand. He received four Commendation medals and retired as MSGT in 1968. After retirement, he worked briefly for Travelers Insurance Company. In 1969, he began his career with the Merced County Fire Department as a Firefighter. He retired in 1987.
Ben married Permelia Mae Brown in 1952, and they raised 5 children together. They were married for 54 years until her passing. Ben was known for his kind and giving heart, his love and devotion to his family, and his dedication to his professions. He will always be remembered for his friendly smile.
Ben was preceded in death by Permelia Howard (wife), Stan Howard (son), Ric Breth (son), and Dennis Breth (son). He is survived by Mary Howard (wife), Dana Baird (daughter), and Brad Howard (son), 13 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and 2 great great-grandchildren.
There will be a Funeral Mass for Ben at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Merced, California, on February 3rd at 9:00 a.m. A reception will follow at Strings Restaurant in Merced. The graveside service and Celebration of Life will be announced at a later date.
