

During World War II, Elbert served in the Army Air Corp as a tail gunner in a B-24 stationed in Norwich, England. He flew many missions over the European Theater. Following the war, he returned to Memphis, Tennessee where he met and married his wife of 60 years, Blanche Billingsley, who preceded him in death in 2007. He earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting from Memphis State University and went on to become an Industrial Engineer for Wilson Meatpacking Company; a position he held for 35 years and which led to numerous moves throughout the United States. He eventually retired in Oklahoma City. In 2006, Elbert and Blanche moved to Merced to live near their daughter.
Elbert was a devout Christian and served through the years as a Deacon in the Southern Baptist Church. He was also a Sunday School Teacher and Superintendent and Usher and was known to preach from the pulpit from time to time. He loved Jesus and he loved his family.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Blanche and is survived by 3 daughters; Diane (Vitro) of Lawrenceville, GA, Denise (Garcia) of Merced, and Lisa (Hamilton) of Clinton Township, MI. He also leaves 5 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, 3 brothers and a sister.
Funeral Services to be held at 11:00am on Thursday, November 14th at Merced District Cemetery. Pastor James Gehrke officiating.
