Helen Dorothy Mitchell, beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on January 16, 2026, at the age of 97. Born on August 31, 1928, in Artesian, South Dakota, to Ollie and Anna Manger, Helen moved with her family to Merced, California, at a young age. She attended local schools and graduated from Merced High School.
Helen was first married to Robert Nordman, with whom she had three children. In 1965, she married Billy Mitchell, and together they shared over fifty years of marriage until Billy's passing.
Throughout her life, Helen was dedicated to her work, holding positions at several Merced businesses, including the Nordman Ranch turkey hatchery, Homer Argial ice cream and soda shop, Stefani's clothing, Keller ladder, and the local cannery. She retired at the age of 52, having demonstrated a strong work ethic from an early age.
Helen and Billy were avid travelers, enjoying fishing and camping across the United States as member of the Sams Travel Club. They spent winters in Yuma, Arizona, and summers in Merced, forming lasting friendships throughout their journeys. Helen was renowned for her hospitality, especially her peach pies, and was active in hosting community gatherings both locally and in Yuma. In her later years, she found joy in crafts and puzzles, often sharing these activities with her family. Her commitment to community service was recognized by the Merced Senior Social Club and the California State Assembly.
Helen cherished her lifelong friendship with Joann Ball (Anderson), with whom she shared many adventures and laughter. Their families remain close to this day.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ollie and Anna Manger; her first husband, Robert Nordman; her second husband, Billy Mitchell; son-in-law Tim Pellissier; and grandson Larry Joe. Helen is survived by her children, Linda Pellissier, Leslie Nordman (Dawn), and Larry Nordman (Jo); 12 grandchildren, Tiffany, Timmy, Jennifer, Julie, Eddie, Lisa, Stefanie, Boomer, Katie, Jason, Robert, and Jamie, and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
