Born on February 8, 1946, in Elkhart, Indiana, Jim lived a life defined by service to his family, his country, and his community. He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Jean; daughters Michelle (Todd), Heather (Steve †), and Kim (Larry); his brother Phil; sister-in-law Kathy; 12 cherished grandchildren; and 4 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Helen and Paul, and his son-in-law, Steve.
A proud Navy veteran, Jim served our country from 1964 to 1968, including a deployment to Vietnam. He was a radioman aboard the USS Whippoorwill, a wooden minesweeper, and took great pride in being one of the “last of the iron men of the wooden ships.” His time in the Navy instilled in him a lifelong sense of duty, humility, and resilience. In more recent years, Jim became an active and proud member of American Legion Post 83, where he found a renewed sense of camaraderie with fellow veterans and another opportunity to serve his community.
Jim carried that same spirit of service into every part of his life. A long-time and passionate member of the Lions Club, Jim served as president of the Merced Golden Lions Club and took on numerous leadership roles at the regional level, chairing multiple committees throughout his decades of involvement. He was known for his tireless dedication, collaborative spirit, and ability to rally others to a cause. His work was recently recognized with the prestigious Melvin Jones Fellowship Award—the highest honor bestowed by Lions Clubs International—for his exemplary humanitarian service and lifelong commitment to improving lives.
In addition to his work with the Lions, Jim was a founder of the Boys and Girls Club of Merced County, a place that became a second home to him and a testament to his belief in building strong, supportive spaces for youth. Over the years, he wore many hats there: executive director, cook, fundraiser, handyman, and mentor. Whether he was preparing meals for children, organizing events, or fixing things around the building, Jim’s hands and heart were always at work.
Jim’s commitment to the community of Merced was unwavering. He led by example, never hesitating to step in and help when needed, and always championing the causes and people he believed in. His legacy is one of generosity, leadership, and love—qualities that touched everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.
A celebration of Jim’s life will be held on Saturday, July 19, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. at the Boys and Girls Club of Merced County. A private interment will at the San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery, Santa Nella will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made in Jim’s honor to one of the causes he held dear: – The Boys and Girls Club of Merced County – Lions Clubs International Foundation – American Legion Post 83
Your contribution will help continue the work Jim dedicated his life to and ensure his legacy of service lives on.
