Miriam Goodrich Stephens, age 97, died January 8th, 2019, at an assisted living facility in Merced, Ca. At the request of the deceased, no services will be held. Born 16, December, 1921 in Porterville, she attended schools there, and graduated from San Jose State University in 1943.
She married the late CDR Jerrel D. Stephens, a Naval Aviator, and with him lived in thirty different homes, including those in San Diego, Pebble Beach, Kansas, Miami, FL, Newport, R.I., Arlington, VA, as well as in Hawaii, Newfoundland, Iceland, Paris, France, and Stuttgart in Germany. In addition, she traveled widely in Europe, the Middle East, North Africa, Russia, Siberia and China, the Caribbean, Malaysia, Australia, and New Zealand and wrote extensively about each of these places
She was active in the Naval Officer’s Wives Clubs, Navy Relief, and the Navy League. She has lived in Merced since 1968, where she joined the Art League, the Symphony League, the Merced County Republican Women, MOAA, and AARP. She spent seventeen years as a Red Cross Volunteer at Castle AFB Hospital.
Her children include a daughter, Shelley Clark, who died in 2007, and her son Jeffrey Stephens, his wife Cathy, and their children Christine and Jeremy, all of Le Grand.
