Rachel Yvonne Brown was born in Imperial, NE on April 4, 1922 and passed away on October 17, 2012 in Merced, CA at the age of 90.
During her high school years Rachel & her family lived in Snelling. She was a Merced High graduate and after graduation she enlisted in the WAVES during WWII. She was stationed in Washington D.C. and held the rank of Yeoman 2nd Class. While in D.C. she & her roommate took several tours of historic places near there. While in the Navy she met and married her husband, Harold. After her husband’s retirement from the Navy, they settled in Atwater where she was a member of the Atwater Methodist Church and then later moved to Merced.
After moving to Merced she became a member of the United Methodist Church of Merced where she was quite active. She helped them conduct Estate Sales and helped with the CATCH (Children At The Church) Program, all of which she enjoyed.
She was a member of Rebekah Lodge #255 of Merced where she held several offices, past Noble Grand of Ophir Rebekah Lodge, Past President of the Ophir Opportunity Club and member of the American Legion Post #83.
Rachel enjoyed knitting and playing cards. Twice a month she met with a group of friends and played Canasta. Her true passion though was going to church and the Lodge.
She was preceded in death in 1990 by her husband, Harold Chester Brown; and parents, Carl & Adelle Peterson.
She leaves behind a sister, Florine Tyra of Houston, MO; and brothers, Wendell Peterson of Gilroy, Duane Peterson of Mariposa, Burdette Peterson of Oroville, Floren Peterson of Billings, MT and Norman Peterson of Merced.
Arrangements are under the direction of Stratford Evans Merced Funeral Home.
