

Robert Eugene Richels, a cherished husband, father, and friend, passed away peacefully on January 20, 2026, at the age of 90 in Merced, California. Born on May 2, 1935, in Breckenridge, Minnesota, Robert's journey through life was marked by his compassionate spirit and unwavering kindness.
Those who knew Robert will remember him as a man of the earth, with hands that worked tirelessly as a milker and farmer. His dedication to the land and his community was evident in everything he did. Robert's love for sports led him to volunteer with the Varsity Boys High School Basketball team at Golden Valley High School, where he became a mentor and friend to many young athletes.
In addition to his work and volunteerism, Robert spent many years contributing to estate sales and food banks at the United Methodist Church. His involvement with the church was not just an act of service; it was a testament to his deep faith and commitment to helping others. Robert was a true people person, someone who never met a stranger and whose presence could light up a room. His favorite gesture, a warm and welcoming hug, will be remembered by all who had the joy of knowing him.
Robert's legacy is carried on by his loving wife, Sharon Richels, and his children, Steve Burkett, Mike Stockton, Robert Stockton, Scott Whitley, and 13 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren. He was a guiding light in their lives and will continue to inspire them with his memory. Robert is preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth and Lerna Richels, and his brothers, Gerry, Michael, and James Richels. He was also preceded in death by his sons Charles Burkett, Donald Burkett and daughters Connie Edwards and Sandra Eastep.
To describe Robert in a few words would be to say he was loving, kind, and friendly. These attributes were not just qualities but the very essence of who he was. He approached life with a gentle heart and a smile that could ease the heaviest of burdens.
Robert you will be deeply missed.
Graveside service for Robert will be held on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, at 10:00 am held at Merced District Cemetery, 1300 B Street, Merced, California.
