MERRITT ISLAND ‒ Deron Collins, Sr. went to be with the Lord peacefully at his home on July 10, at the age of 94. Deron was preceded in death by his wife, Billie June Collins.
Deron was a loving father of six children: Deron Collins Jr., Dr. Keith Collins (Barb), Dr. Craig Collins (Brenda), Jeff Collins (Vickie), Leslie Ritter, and Chris Collins (Heidi); Grandad to Amanda, Brian, Chad, Corey, Courtney, Elizabeth, Ethan, Jessica, Kyle, and Timmy; Great-Grandad to Baylor, Bentley, Boone, Colbie, Conor, Easton, Elijah, Grayson, Kylah, Levi, Logan, and Reese.
Deron was born in Vidalia, Georgia, on April 10, 1928, and was raised in the Masonic Home in Macon. He attended the University of Georgia and graduated with the degree Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) in 1953. After graduation, Deron wanted to join the Veterinary Corps of the armed services, but no positions were available. Deron initially worked for the government and was responsible for infectious disease testing of cattle throughout central Florida. He then moved to Merritt Island in 1959, establishing what would prove to be a thriving veterinary practice, one in which he was well loved by his clients and “furry friends.” Deron was passionate about serving others, especially those in need, and made it his life’s mission to do so. His kindness and humor were traits to be admired. In addition to his love for family, friends, and animals, Deron loved being on the water and gardening.
Friends and family will be received at Wylie-Baxley Funeral Home (1360 N. Courtenay Pkwy, Merritt Island, FL 32953) on Thursday, July 14, from 5-7 p.m.
A Celebration of Life Service will take place at Wylie-Baxley Funeral Home on Friday, July 15, at 11 a.m., with burial to follow at Brevard Memorial Park (320 Spring St., Cocoa, FL 32927).
