Dorothy Barden Leighty

Dorothy 'Dot' (Barden) Leighty, 79, passed away Friday, August 15, 2014 at Cape Canaveral Hospital. She is survived by her husband, George W. Leighty, Jr.; sons, David Leighty and Steven Leighty; daughter, Linda McGlamery; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by son, Michael Leighty. A lifelong resident of FL, Dot was born in Vero Beach, grew up in Melbourne, and graduated from Orlando HS. She and George were married in 1953 and moved to Merritt Island in 1965 to raise their family. She worked for Southern Bell, retiring in 1978. In her younger years, she and George were avid square dancers. A lifelong seamstress, Dot was instrumental in the early years of Lassie League Softball, making uniforms for many of the teams that George coached.Her kindness and generosity touched the lives of countless friends and family members and she will be terribly missed.Services will be held Thursday, August 21 at 11 a.m. at Wylie-Baxley Funeral Home, Merritt Island. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Central Brevard Sharing Center in Cocoa.
