Mrs. Smithson and family, I have known Eric since he was a teenager. He and my son Steve were best friends and use to go to the beach and fishing together when Eric lived at the condo in Orlando. I am in complete and utter shock to learn of his passing. He was one of the most caring and impressive men I have ever met .Even as a teen, he had such a presence and sense of responsibility and always was there if you needed him. Im still in disbelief, I've Known Eric for 12 yrs, I helped mentor  him when he was a tech at Cape Canaveral Hosp, then later our paths crossed again and I mentored  him in the ER at Wuesthoff Hosp as a new RN. He always had a great smile, and a positive attitude and would jump in and lend a hand without being asked, he always wanted to learn more. When we nurses and paramedics mentor the new ones coming on board we would call them "Our Kids "  I feel like I have lost a son, my heart is breaking beyond belief ! My thoughts, prayers and my love go to Jess his wife and to Eric's children. I pray that the Lord will hold them togethor and help them get thru this very difficult time.

When Eric was just a young teen and our family was enjoying dinner at a local restaurant in Niagara Falls, I asked him what he wanted to be when he grew up. I can still remember his answer. He sat up straight, stuck out his chest and said "Rich". We all had a good laugh.
I hope he knew how "rich" he was.

Eric had a way of loving and caring for people in a way that few people have.  My heart is broken to think that maybe he didn't realize the enormous impact his life has made on others.  He will be greatly missed.  May God give comfort and peace to Jess and the Smithson family.

From the moment I met Eric, he was nothing but a great smile... always brought a lighter side to things.  He always had a positive thought, and an anecdote to relate pertaining to work or home that made everybody smile or laugh... Fluffy, as we nicknamed him for no reason, was very easy going.  I will miss him.  And even though I might not understand, I hope that his family and children find peace in knowing this man had an amazing love for them. My thoughts and prayers are with the family.

Eric was a great person to work with, not only did he give out a helping hand to his co-workers, but also brought smiles to the ER.  He will be missed greatly, my heart goes out to the Smithson family.

Eric and I started this chapter of our lives together. We attended nursing school together and later worked together quite often in the ER. His presence was comforting as he was a great nurse and co-worker. Always a patient advocate, always willing to take that extra step to help fellow co-workers. Often feeding off of each other's humor, I felt we were a force to be reckoned with when it came to dealing with critical or difficult patients. Eric made me a better nurse. My life, just as many of Eric's family and friend's lives, will never be the same. Death took a life, it can not take memories. May peace find you my brother, as you could not find peace.

My thoughts and prayers are with Shea  and Tyler who have lost their father too young.  May peace be with the family knowing that he will live on in their memories.

Eric so many memories we har ve shared. Our walks, talks, and laughs. Y ou made working in the ER tolerable and very interesting. Your sense of humor will always shine. I will always remember you and your advice you gave me time after time again. I hope you are at peace and my prayers go to your family. I miss you.

We work in one of the most stressful environments I’ve ever known. From the first day I worked with Eric I noticed the stress was somehow easier to manage. I think it was his ability to smile through the frustration, his quick wit, his easy laugh, and his amazing sense of humor that made life in the ER tolerable; sometimes even fun. He was a ray of worm sunshine in a cold dark place. It was an easy transition from coworker to friends for us. I could tell Eric what I was feeling. No matter what it was. He always listened and never judged. He was my friend. Today I have a gaping hole in my heart. I can not fathom what his loss means to his family. Its very sad to see a great man that has given so much to our community go without saying goodbye. Eric you are gone but never fogotten. The few times I saw you in the ER at Wuesthoff Hospital were enough to remember how polite and sweet you were. Our thoughts and prayers are always with you and your loved ones.

Eric will be greatly missed in the ED. I hope he's at peace now.

During the time we've known Eric, life was always full of fun.  Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you.

I can't even begin to tell you how sorry I am over the loss of Eric.  I am in complete shock.  I am an ER doctor who worked with Eric.  He was one of my favorite nurses to work with.   I was always happy to see him show up for the night shift. Eric had a very quite demeanor on the outside but was always so personable and easy to talk to. He was so good with his patients and never hesitated to help out with others.  I probably depended on him too much.  I would often ask him to help me with patients when the other nurses were busy.  And even though he had his own patients, often some who were very sick and required a lot of his time and care, he never hesitated to help me out and never once complained or acted like it was an inconvenience.   I loved hearing his stories about the farm and especially the one about his daughter's determination to overcome her fear of the rooster!!  My heart is so broken for you all.  I will truly miss Eric.  Florida Hospital has lost an incredible nurse and I have lost a friend.   I will keep you all in my heart and prayers.   Sincerely, Kim Buffkin
