
Jim was born on February 1, 1944, in Chicago, Illinois. He graduated from Western Military Academy and began his career in the pipefitter and plumbing mechanical trade in Chicago. After relocating to Melbourne, Florida, he worked at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station and later at the NASA Space Center until his retirement in 2006. Jim took great pride in his work and the contributions he made throughout his career.
He was preceded in death by his father, Robert J Layton; his mother, Margaret Layton; and his brother, Robert Layton.
Jim is lovingly remembered by his devoted wife, Marsha Layton; his daughters, Lisa Lee and Robin Layton of Orlando; his stepdaughter, Kathleen Rios and her husband, Jose, of Melbourne, Florida; and his stepson, Thomas Michniewicz and his wife, Angela Michniewicz, of Melbourne, Florida. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Arlene Layton, of Lake Worth, FL; sister in law and brother in law Maureen and Phillip Bjorndal, sister in law MaryJane Connor his nephews, Robert Layton and his wife, Cheryl, of Stuart, FL, and James Layton and his wife, Theresa, of Lake Worth, FL; as well as five cherished grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A private celebration of Jim’s life was held on February 12th.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jim’s memory to St. Francis Hospice of Melbourne, FL, or the Brevard Alzheimer’s Foundation.
