James P. “Jim” Mahoney (age 50) passed away unexpectedly but peacefully at home in Merritt Island, Florida on November 20, 2014. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of twenty-four years, Sarah (Smiling) Mahoney and his parent's Earl and Doreen Mahoney of Ormond Beach. He leaves a daughter and son, Sandra Tumey and Paul Mahoney, and his mother-in-law Bea Smiling. Jim was the loving grandfather of Hayley, Madison, Morgan and James Tumey. He adored and doted upon his grandchildren and will be forever in their hearts. In addition, Jim leaves behind a sister, brother, and brother-in-law, Deborah Perkins, Jeremy Mahoney-Wright and Frederick Wright of Massachusetts. He was the uncle of Thomas, Kevin and Sarah Perkins. Jim had many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends all of whom will miss him deeply.
Jim was born on July 23, 1964 in Palo Alto, California. The first years of his life were spent on the West Coast. In 1977 he moved to New England with his parents and siblings. Jim graduated from Whitman-Hanson Regional High School in 1982 and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. The military was an important part of his life for many years and Jim took great pride in his military service. In 1987, Jim relocated to Merritt Island, Florida. On October 6, 1990, he and Sarah married, and began their journey through life together. At the time of his passing Jim worked in Facilities Maintenance and Operations at the First Baptist Church of Merritt Island, where he was a dedicated, valued and well-liked employee. Through the church Jim missioned on several occasions in Haiti. His work there inspired him and his commitment to making a difference in the lives of others touched us all. He had a loving and generous personality. His belief in God was strong and he held this close to his heart.
Jim had many hobbies and interests. One of Jim's favorite things to do was meeting up with his Dad at a local restaurant and sharing conversation, laughter and the pure joy of their father/son relationship. He was an avid history buff, especially anything related to military history. Going for rides on his prized Ninja motorcycle brought him great happiness and joy. Jim loved and adored his dog Bella and they spent countless hours together taking long walks and scheduling doggie-play dates with his neighbors and their dogs.
There are no words that can adequately describe the void that has been left in our lives from Jim's untimely passing. He will be forever loved, deeply missed and always in our hearts. In lieu of flowers please consider making a contribution in Jim's memory to one of the following:
*Providing a Christmas toy to your local “Toys for Tots” program. This military sponsored initiative fits beautifully with Jim's passion for his love and dedication to United States Marine Corps.
*Presenting a monetary donation to the First Baptist Church Of Merritt Island that will serve to benefit their missionary efforts in Haiti of which Jim was a huge part of.
*Contribution to assist with funeral expenses.
Services for Jim will be held 2:00pm Monday November 24, 2014 at First Baptist Church of Merritt Island in the main Worship Center. The address of the church is 140 Magnolia, Merritt Island, Florida 32952.
