Amy was born in 1945 in Pahokee, Florida to Dr. Wilburn and Cora Young. She attended elementary, middle, and high school in Pahokee, growing up with her two sisters and brother. She studied Anthropology at Florida State University, where she met and married the father of her two children. After multiple moves throughout the Eastern US, the family settled in Fort Collins, Colorado in 1974 to be near her in-laws. While living in Northern Colorado, Amy became the first female deputy on the Larimer County Sherriff’s Force. She relocated to Mesa, Arizona in 1983, pursuing a very long and esteemed career in insurance, eventually becoming a trainer and manager, and culminated her career by retiring from Scottsdale Insurance Company after over 35 years in the industry. In her retirement, she found joy as a member of St. James Episcopal Church in Tempe, Arizona as a congregant and Altar Guild member, and with her P.E.O. Sisterhood, serving as an officer in many roles over the years. But her greatest joy was caring for and supporting the endeavors of her family, especially her children and MOST especially her grandchildren. In the end, she knew where she was going, she knew she was adored and important in our lives, and her last words to us were “I just really love you guys”.
Amy is survived by her daughter, Lynn Golden (Brad), her son, Lex Medlin (Lori), her sisters, Jo Stout and Katherine Swingler (Colin), brother Dr. Walter Young (Debra), her step-daughters, Dee Schippel (Steve) and Tracey Kester (Wayne), and a large extended family through marriage and friendships. Her greatest loves were her grandchildren – Sydney, Bear, Abby, Lila and Monty, and her step-grandchildren, Nicci, Chris, Matt, and Ashlee. She is preceded in death by her husband of nearly 30 years, Glenn I. Sabiers, her parents, and her brother-in-law, Jerry Stout.
A memorial service is planned for 11:00am on Saturday, February 3, 2023, at St. James Episcopal Church, 975 E. Warner Rd, Tempe, AZ 85284 in Tempe, Arizona.
Amy loved Jimmy Buffet, Lynn’s Meatloaf, Lex’s sense of humor, plants and flowers, PBS science and mystery shows, spoiling all of us and enjoying seeing family and friends perform on and off-stage in local theatre productions.
