He was born in Pasco, Washington on March 14, 1957, to his parents Virgil and Amelia Carpenter. Art had asthma as a baby and so his parents moved to Phoenix for a drier climate. Art grew up in Starlight Park where he attended school, played basketball with his friends, and played little league where he was known to break a bat or two with his massive swings. He attended Starlight Park Elementary, Desert Sands, and Maryvale High School where he played football, and transferred to Trevor Browne High School when it opened. Shortly after graduation, he joined the US Air Force and served as a Security Policeman in Italy. After discharge, he returned to Phoenix and worked at Motorola where he met his wife Betty and her daughter Kathy. Art and Betty had daughters Tina and Tracy. He graduated from the Phoenix Police Academy and proudly served the City of Phoenix as a Police Officer for more than 20 years. Art later married Debbie and gained daughter Becki and son Michael. Art loved to travel and play golf with his friends, was a master storyteller (jokes included), and above all else he was an amazing father, husband, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, son, and friend. He passed unexpectedly at home on Friday, March 24, 2023, just 10 days after his 66th birthday.
He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife Debbie; children Kathy, Tina, Tracy, Becki, and Michael; grandchildren Lisa, Aydia, Jasmine, Alex and Lacey; great grandchildren Ariya, Braeli, Ian, and Hailey; sisters and brothers in law Estela & Paul, and Susan & Barry; ex-wife Betty; and sister-in-law Lori.
All will miss his dad jokes, peanut brittle, and most of all, his incredible kindness and unconditional love. Family was everything to him and we will always honor his legacy and keep his light in our hearts and minds and will forever remember him as the amazingly kind and honest man that he was. God has called him home too early, but we know his light will shine on through us. We love you forever, Art.
