Bernd Dietrich Granzow — devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend — passed away peacefully at home in Mesa, Arizona, on Monday, March 16, 2026, with his beloved wife Patricia at his side. He was 85 years old.
Born on February 6, 1941, in Roggentin, Germany, Bernd entered the world during wartime. His family soon fled the approaching Russian forces and resettled in northern Germany, where he grew up learning the value of hard work on the family farm. Those early lessons shaped the discipline and integrity that would accompany him throughout his life.
As a young man, Bernd joined the Luftwaffe and trained to become a fighter pilot. His training brought him to Arizona, where he completed his undergraduate pilot training at Williams AFB in Mesa and his initial fighter weapons training in the F104 Starfighter at Luke AFB in Glendale. It was during this chapter — far from home, but exactly where life meant him to be — that he met the love of his life, Patricia.
Bernd and Patricia were married on May 14, 1968, in Hamburg, Germany, beginning a partnership marked by devotion, humor, and a deep, abiding admiration for one another. Military life kept them on the move, but together they built a home wherever they landed. While stationed in Klosterlechfeld, they welcomed their son, Stephan, in 1969, followed by their daughter, Rebecca, in 1970. Assignments in Wichita Falls, Texas, and later Jever, Germany, would follow before Bernd retired from the military in 1983.
The family then returned to Mesa, where Bernd began a second distinguished career as a Boeing 747 pilot with United Airlines. After his flying days came to a close, he embraced a life centered around family, close friends, and the military community that had shaped him. He remained deeply connected to the Cactus Starfighter Squadron at Luke AFB and played an active role in the CSS student exchange program, offering guidance and a warm welcome to German exchange students adjusting to life in Phoenix.
Bernd will be remembered for his exceptional work ethic and his unwavering integrity — but those who truly knew him understood that the greatest, most foundational part of him was the grace and kindness he carried deep within. He treated everyone he knew with the sort of patience and kindness that could only come from such a master in the art of living.
That gentle spirit revealed itself most beautifully during Christmas every year at “Omi and Opi’s.” Omi decorated the house each year with such care and warmth- the entire home felt enchanting. And while the gifts on Christmas Eve were plentiful, they were never the source of the magic. The true magic was the soft, contented smile on Opi’s face as he watched his grandchildren rustle about beneath the magnificent tree they were so proud to share. In those moments, he was fully present, deeply connected, and peacefully content — a quiet reflection of the grace he carried in his heart and shared so freely with those he loved.
And of course, no reflection on Bernd’s life is complete without honoring the woman who walked beside him. Patricia — Omi — was not only his partner, but the person who elevated every part of who he was. Winning her love and sharing life with her was, without question, his proudest accomplishment. The playful, sheepish tone he adopted whenever he thought he might be “in trouble” with her never failed to bring laughter and comfort to those around them. Their love was steady, joyful, and deeply admired.
Bernd is survived by his wife Patricia; his son Stephan and his wife Renee; his daughter Rebecca and her husband Tom; and his four cherished grandchildren — Shane, Claire, Chloe, and Caitlin — who will forever carry his kindness, his strength, and his example forward.
A celebration of life will be held at 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM on Friday, April 10, 2026, at Mariposa Gardens Memorial Park and Funeral Care in Mesa, Arizona. A gathering of family and friends will follow at the Granzow home at 4411 E Fairfield Street in Mesa.
