Bette Hammond, born Beatrice Anne Hagen in Virginia, Minnesota on July 23, 1923 to Bert Hagen and Anne Lackner. She married the love of her life Howard Hammond of Eugene, Oregon. He preceded her in death March 1, 1995. She is survived by her two sons Robert and Bryan. Bette was an inspiration to her family, friends and fellow students when she graduated with an Associate of Arts degree in Computer Science and Biology from Long Beach City College of Long Beach, California at the young age of 55 (1978). She loved her family and friends and enjoyed retirement in Las Vegas and Pahrump, Nevada, all the while enjoying playing the casinos and bowling with her close buddies. This is where she picked-up her new nickname of “Ms. Bette” to her friends. Known for her sweet sense of humor, she would rejoice in proudly retelling the story of the family moving to Colorado in 1963 and passing her driver’s license test in a bright red MBG convertible, with a stick shift, in the snow, in high heels, with a 100% score. As she told it, she was wearing bright red lipstick at the time, Howard’s favorite. And, at the age of 80, how she attended her first bodybuilding show with her health club friends and was cheering at the top of her lungs while picking her favorites. Ms. Bette passed quietly after a bout with pneumonia that started at Christmas time, one of her favorite times of the year. She will be dearly missed. Arrangements were entrusted to Mariposa Gardens Funeral Care.
