

Darrell was born May 19, 1945 in San Francisco, California to Monte and Wilda Summers. He grew up in Chanute and graduated from Chanute High School and Chanute Junior College.
Darrell enlisted in the Kansas Army National Guard in 1963 and served as the full time Administrative Supply Technician for the Chanute unit from 1969 to 1978. He continued full time employment with the Arizona Army National Guard through 1993, retiring as a Flight Operations Sergeant Major.
Darrell returned to Chanute in1994 and was employed with the Kansas Department of Revenue as a Drivers License Examiner in the Chanute office until retiring in 2008.
He was a member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Mesa, Arizona and was a former member of the First Christian Church and Grace Episcopal Church in Chanute. Darrell also was a member of the Chanute American Legion, Mesa, AZ Disabled American Veterans, and The Arizona Army National Guard "Graybeards" Association.
Darrell married Kay Russell on June 18, 2001.
Darrell is survived by his wife, two sons, Brent Summers and wife, Jen (Chandler, Arizona) and Dana Summers and wife, Heather (Mesa, Arizona). Step-son, Bryan Rommel and wife, Shelly (Louisberg, Kansas), and a step-daughter, Margo Powell and husband, Wade (Kellyville, Oklahoma). Darrell had six grandchildren and three step-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents.
A memorial service will be held at St. Mark's Episcopal Church at a later date.
