Gene Franklin Sawyer, born September 6, 1947 passed away peacefully on April 22, 2026, surrounded by his family, after a long illness. He was the son of Leonard Sawyer and Bettie (Black) Sawyer, and the loving husband of Marcia (Miller) Sawyer, with whom he shared 57 years of marriage. Gene was also a devoted brother to Darla Pummill and brother‑in‑law Mike Pummill.
Gene is survived by his wife Marcia; his daughter Michelle Van Valkenburg and son‑in‑law Douglas Van Valkenburg of Bedford, NH; his son Thomas Sawyer and daughter‑in‑law Catherine Sawyer of San Tan Valley, AZ; and his grandchildren Maris, Grace, Ashley, Bea, and Thomas. He also leaves behind wonderful nephews and cousins who were an important part of his life.
Born in Warrensburg, Missouri, Gene was a larger‑than‑life personality whose humor could light up any room. He lived by a simple but powerful mantra: do your best always, and if you make a mistake, course‑correct, make amends, and pick yourself up to move toward a better day.
A graduate of Park College and a decorated Air Force veteran, Gene built a career doing work he truly loved. He served first as a Special Agent in the United States Air Force and later as a Security Director for several companies, most recently at Fiserv, where he was grateful to work alongside colleagues he deeply respected.
Gene loved all things sports and would happily watch any game, any time. He was also an avid golfer. Beyond that, he was a devoted fan of good comedy, believing life was far too short to dwell in negativity.
He was a man who believed deeply in redemption and second chances. Gene saw people not for their past mistakes but for who they could become, and he offered opportunities for growth with generosity and faith. His loyalty to his family was fierce, his love unconditional, and his support unwavering.
Gene will be profoundly missed, but his family and friends are comforted by the knowledge that he lived with joy and intention—never putting life off for tomorrow, but meeting each moment with openness and gratitude.
Services and Burial will be private with family.
