Ida Van Slyke Glenn (Zoraida Ladrón de Guevara) was born on January 13, 1936 in the mountains of Coyula, Oaxaca. She immigrated to America in 1954 (at age eighteen), eventually landing in Phoenix, Arizona, where she fell in love with Clifford Leon Van Slyke and they were married in 1959. Together they raised their six children in Mesa. In 2001 Ida married John Glenn, who was a dear family friend. They had many wonderful years together.
Ida was a strong woman who put her trust in the Lord every day. Her convictions guided every decision of her life. She was heavily involved in her church, Trinity Church, where she was a faithful attendant for over 40 years and deeply cherished all of her friends there. Anyone who knew Ida knew she was a social butterfly and probably received an invitation to join her for dinner at her house. She loved to host family and friends. Ida enjoyed singing, cooking, sewing and tending to her plants. One of her proudest accomplishments was winning Teacher of the Year for teaching English as a Second Language at Higley Elementary School where she worked for several years. The most important things in Ida’s life were her faith in Jesus, which she instilled in all of her children, and her large family that brought her tremendous joy. Ida was a fierce prayer warrior who prayed for each and every person in her life. Ida had a prayer list of 200 people that she prayed for by name everyday!
Ida is survived by her six children: Kim (Jim) Larson, David (Caroline) Van Slyke, Kelly (Allison) Van Slyke, Dorie (Roger) Understiller, Marlene (Bob) Dunn, and Michele (Rod) Wolff. She is also survived by fifteen grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
Memorial Service will be held Friday April 8, 10 am at Trinity Church 2130 East University, Mesa, Arizona
