At the young age of 6, Jim helped bring the gospel of Jesus Christ to his family when he happily started throwing a broomstick back and forth with 2 LDS missionaries, until the game stopped short when the broomstick dented the family car, at which point his parents met with the missionaries and were soon baptized. Jim loved the gospel, and made it the central part of his life ever since.
He served a mission to the Lord among the people of New York from 1967 to 1969 after which he moved to Utah to attend BYU where he met his eternal companion. After getting married in the Logan, Utah Temple, Jim and Mary brought their 8 children into a wonderful family where the gospel was passionately taught, and a love for God and for each other was practiced.
Jim worked hard all of his life to achieve his goals. From selling newspapers as a child, making ice cream sandwiches to sell, brokering financial lending, managing various businesses, providing life insurance and then commercial insurance, to customer satisfaction coordination, Jim did whatever he needed to in order to provide for his family.
Jim’s first priority was always his family. He was the coach or assistant coach for his daughters’ softball teams, and his sons’ soccer teams. He served in scouting for many years and helped all of his sons get their Eagle Scout award. Camping was a favorite family activity that was done often, along with trips to Disneyland, Yellowstone and endless other family activities. He and Mom instituted weekly family home evening to teach the gospel to their children while also playing games and creating unbreakable family bonds.
Among his hobbies, Jim loved America and its history. He read books on the constitution, the wonders of America’s inspired founding, and could be found quoting many of the founding fathers words of wisdom often during conversations. He also loved playing VR Golf with any of his children willing to join him at any time of day, and any day of the week, other than Sunday. He loved board games with his kids, and in his younger days would play basketball and racquetball with his children.
Loved and honored by all of his children, both by blood and by marriage, Jim led a wonderful life and shone as an example of a man dedicated to the Lord and to his duty. A man constant in his desire to do what was right and leave a powerful example to his posterity of one who loves the Lord.
Predeceased by his parents, his sister Pam, his granddaughter Katie, and his beautiful wife, Mary, Jim is survived by his brother, Bruce, his 8 children and their spouses, RuthAnn (Richard), Rachel (Kyle), David (Heather), Michael (Amber), Jonathan (Charlotte), Nathan (Kristen), Rebekah (Jedediah), Matthew (Kate), 26 grandchildren, and 5 great grandchildren.
Though he will be greatly missed in this life for his fun wit, competitive personality, and profound gospel insights, we know he is happy in the peace of the Lord with his sweetheart, free from physical frailties, and look forward to seeing him again some day.
