

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Jay Norman Payne, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, who left this world on December 26, 2024, at the age of 93. Norman was born on January 8,1931, in Bladen County, North Carolina. He lived a life rich with love, adventure, and unwavering dedication to his family and community.
Norman was the cherished son of Foy and Helen Payne and was preceded in death by his beloved brother Howard Payne, his brother Hugh Payne, his sister Esther Payne Caveness, as well as his parents. He was survived by loving sisters, Joyce, Rachael and Fay. He was also predeceased by his dear son Michael and grandson Landon, whose memories he carried in his heart. His brother, Herbert Payne passed only a couple of days later.
On April 26, 1953, Norman married the love of his life, Margaret, in Burlington, North Carolina. Their 71 year marriage was a testament to love and partnership, as they built a beautiful family together. Norman is survived by his loving wife, Margaret, and his devoted daughter Marsha Payne Teasley. He was a proud grandfather to his granddaughters Toni Harmon, Kimberly Brexler, and Monica Petrone, grandsons Cameron Brexler and Landon Payne, and enjoyed every moment spent with his great-granddaughters Tristan, Madison and Parker, as well as his great-grandsons Ryan, Jaylen, Aaron, and Tyler.
Norman’s commitment to his family was unwavering, and he prioritized their happiness above all else. He was a man of profound intelligence, having graduated from the University of Houston with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering. His education served him well after his four years of military service in the Navy aboard the battleship Iowa, where he fostered a strong sense of duty and honor.
Throughout his professional career, Norman made significant contributions to the field of engineering. He worked for renowned organizations such as Western Electric, Bell Labs, and AT&T, where he served as a Senior Engineer, notably working on the Titan Missile system. His colleagues admired him for his expertise and dedication to his work.
Norman was not only an accomplished professional but also a vibrant member of his community. He was active in the Christian church and enjoyed various hobbies that showcased his zest for life. An avid dancer, Norman loved ballroom dancing, clogging, and square dancing. He was also a skilled scuba diver, beekeeper, and wind surfer. His adventurous spirit led him to pursue snow skiing, shrimping, clam digging, and even riding motorcycles. Norman designed and built houses with his wife on the coast of North Carolina as well as gardening and creating stained glass. He embraced every opportunity to travel and explore new places, having lived in North Carolina, New Jersey, and Arizona.
Norman's kind and intelligent nature left a lasting impact on everyone he met. His deep faith in God guided him through life's challenges and inspired those around him. He was a proud member of the American Legion and the Camping Club, where he enjoyed building lasting friendships and creating cherished memories.
As we remember Jay Norman Payne, we celebrate a life well-lived—a life dedicated to family, service, faith, and joy. He will be deeply missed by everyone whose lives he touched, and his legacy will continue to shine through the love and memories shared by his family and friends.
Norman’s final words of wisdom were, 1) Take care of each other, 2) Be happy, and 3) Make a difference in the world.
A Celebration of Life service will be held in the near future to celebrate his life, where all who knew him are welcome to share their stories and memories.
Rest in peace, dear Norman. Your spirit will forever remain in our hearts.
