He became an aviation cadet and was later commissioned a second lieutenant receiving his pilot’s wings. He was sent to Europe where he flew a B-24 Liberator. On his 9th mission his plane was shot down over German territory. He spent the next 3 months evading the German soldiers. Following WWII he was stationed in Japan during part of the Allied Occupation Project where he served with the Fifth Air Force. He later attended Wayne State University and received his degree while stationed at Norton AFB in San Bernardino. He was a command pilot. One of his most treasured memories in his military career was in 1958 where he was the contracting officer at the Air Force Missile Test Center at Cape Canaveral at the very beginning of the space program. He was recognized for his work at the Cape with a Legion of Merit, the Air Force’s second highest peace time award. Colonel Hamby concluded his 32 year career as Commander of the Northeastern United States Department of Defense.
