

Lloyd Albert Whetten, 88, passed away peacefully in the home of his daughter and son-in-law Susan Whetten Udall and David Udall, surrounded by family, on Saturday, November 8, 2014. Lloyd was born in 1926 in Dublan, Chihuahua, Mexico. His parents were Henry Alden Whetten and Lilly Mae Beecroft. His family moved to Arizona and he attended Chandler High School, leaving at age 17 to serve in the U.S. Army Air Corps in WWII and staying in the Air Force until 1948. He attended Denver University, BYU, and ASU. He served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints to Mexico in 1950-1952. He spent a year at Ft. Whipple Military Hospital in Prescott and eventually fully recovered from tuberculosis to lead a healthy life. On March 30, 1956, Lloyd married Carol Ruth Tyler in the Mesa Temple. They had five children and 52 happy years together. Lloyd was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He worked as a dairyman, employee and later manager and president of the Desert Sage Water Company, and president of Sahuaro Construction Company. He was a member of Rotary, the Mesa Chamber of Commerce, and served as board member and president of The Public Utilities Association of Arizona. He served in many capacities at church including gospel doctrine teacher, scoutmaster, bishop, and temple worker. Lloyd was preceded in death by his wife Carol, and survived by brothers Alden, Bill and Tom Whetten; sisters Arlene Waite and Kathleen Whetten; and children Beverly Hawkins (Barney), Robert Lloyd (Claire), Susan Udall (Dave), Mary Clifford (Matt) and Nancy Andrus (Dan). He has 17 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. A viewing will be held on Friday, November 21 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Mariposa Gardens Cemetery Chapel, 400 S. Power Rd. The funeral service will be held on Saturday, November 22 at 11:00 a.m., with a viewing at 10:00 a.m. prior to the service, at the LDS Century Gardens Ward Building on 633 S. Higley Rd. Interment will follow the services at the City of Mesa Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to the LDS Perpetual Education Fund at www.ldsphilanthropies.org would be appreciated. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Mariposa Gardens Memorial Park and Funeral Care.
