Melvin (Mel) George Rogers, age 84, passed away peacefully at his home on February 1, 2019. He was born December 28, 1934 in Wilmar California, to George and Katherine (Piper) Rogers. He was a graduate of El Monte High School before proudly serving in the US Army in Japan from 1958 to 1963. After returning from his military service, he married the love of his life, Lois Karen (Neeley) Rogers on February 14, 1961 in Sparks, Nevada. Together they had 3 children: Lawrence (Marilyn) Melvin Rogers, Teresa (Dale) Kay Drevdahl, Alana Karen Rogers, and 11 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, 3 children, and 3 sisters: Patti (Jim) Johnson, Virginia (Mike) Burton, and Carol Patrick.
During World War II, at the age of 10, he would take the bus around Los Angeles to stand in ration lines for his mother. By the age of 13, he was working at the Laundromat helping to support the family- he loved his mother more than words can say! He worked as a Shipping & Receiving Supervisor for Scanbe Manufacturing for the last 16 years of his career in the Los Angeles area. After his mother passed away in 1976, they made the big decision to move the family from the smoggy LA area to the small town of Benson, Arizona where they bought the Western Auto Store. Benson proved to be a great place to raise his family! After 6 years of struggle in a tough economy, they moved to the Tucson area for 5 years. In 1987, they decided to move to Klamath Falls, Oregon to help care for his beloved mother-in-law, Louise Wicker. He always loved to work hard and provide for his family! In 1994 he found the career he most loved of all his work life. He became a Real Estate Agent. For the next 18 years he was one of the top sales producers in the Klamath Falls area. He retired in 2012 at the age of 77 and moved to Mesa, Arizona. He was a loyal husband, teaching father, and a great friend to so many!
Ten years to the day of their marriage on February 14, 1971, they stood together in a gospel meeting and made their choice to serve and follow Jesus. It was the most important decision of their lives.
His favorite hobby throughout his life was gardening and planting. He left beautiful trees and roses growing everywhere they lived. In later years they enjoyed some overseas trips, RVing, and visiting friends and family.
The family will greet friends at the Funeral Service planned for 11am Thursday, February 7, 2019 at Farnsworth Hall on 6157 E. University Dr. in Mesa, Arizona.
A small Burial Service will be held on Friday, February 8, 2019 at 9am at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona in Phoenix, Arizona
