Dear Grandma,

Growing up, you were a special part of my life.  I have memories of visiting your house, eating fresh figs from your backyard tree, making fresh-squeezed lemonade, making coconut icees and making home videos starring the neighborhood cats.  You taught me how to make the best pot roast.

I was proud of having a grandma willing to try new things.  When I was growing up, you learned to drive, went to college and went rafting down the Colorado River.  You were a voracious reader.  You were always loving, kind, generous and expressed a positive attitude with a smile.

I am fortunate that I had such a wonderful grandmother and that I was able to spend so much of my time growing up with you.  At the 2013 Cruz Family Reunion, while enjoying the view of the lake from the deck, you seemed peaceful and content.

You are the family member I've been closest to.  No matter what, you were always proud of all of your grandchildren.  For a 91-year-young grandma, you lived a remarkably independent life.  You will always be special to me.

Olga, or as I know her Grandma.  My Grandma was a huge part of my life.  From watching my sister and I as kids, to slipping us some spending money when we were teens (when my mom wasn't looking), to trying to teach me a thing or two in the kitchen while I attended culinary school. She was always there to help as much as she could.  We shared a passion for cooking, and a bigger passion for eating.  Her kindness and generosity are traits I won't ever forget.  She is missed daily and remembered fondly.

To me olga's greatest characteristic was her sense of adventure. She learned how to drive, graduated college , and rafted down the Colorado Rivet all AFTER retiring. She was a wonderful cook who could whip up a tasty meal in just a few minutes. She was often smiling, always helpful and will be missed. I'm a better person for having known her.

Olga, my Mom, was a wonderful person.  I'm glad that John and I were able to spend more time with her since moving to Arizona.  We missed a lot when living in Colorado. She enjoyed reading, going to plays and the arts.  I miss her every day.  I catch myself thinking "I have to call Mom" and then I realize I can't do that anymore.  Will miss her always.

Olga was a part of my life for over 70 years.  I will miss her forever.  We shared a lot of good times and some not so good times.  That's what a lifetime relationship is all about.

Olga was such a fantastic woman. I have nothing but wonderful memories of her, both from my childhood and as an adult.  Her great attitude and positive energy were infectious.  I will miss her but I am a better person for having known her.  Perhaps I will go rafting down the Colorado River at age 67 in her honor.

Olga always had a smile to share! With her warm smile, twinkling eyes and great sense of humor, Olga had the ability to catch you completely off guard with one of her witty comments or observations. Olga was a lover of life and an inspiration to others to live life to the fullest. My heartfelt thanks to Jane and family for sharing Olga's beautiful presence with friends. I imagine Olga flying on the wings of an Angel and looking forward to her next adventure - with that twinkle in her eye. She will be missed.

"I'm so excited, and I just can't hide it, I'm about to lose control and I think I like it..." This was Olga's favorite song. she used to sing it while dusting and dancing around.  This exemplifies what people remember most about my mother, Olga. We remember her smile, her laugh and her positive attitude. One of her expressions was "why not?" This why not attitude is why Olga learned how to drive at age 65, went to college at age 67 and her adventurous 11 day trip rafting down the Colorado river through the Grand Canyon at age 67 with her college buddies. Olga loved reading,history, politics, and going to the movies. I miss her.

Olga was the lady I always hoped to be. She embraced life and made it so much fun. I have such great memories of when she would come to NJ to visit and especially of us all taking a donkey ride down the canyon when Christine and I stayed with her.  She will be missed and thought of fondly like the rest of Cruz's who have touched my life. Sending much love to you, Jane, Ruthie and John...xoxo

Olga was a "cool old lady"!  Before meeting her, Emily spoke fondly of her grandma, Olga, telling me about her can-do attitude.  I was impressed by stories of Olga going to college and white water rafting at a time in life when most people retire.  

When I finally did meet Olga in person, she continued to impress me.  At 90 years old, she walked daily, was sharp as a tack, was a voracious reader with a keen interest in current events, and had a great sense of humor and laugh. She never missed a beat...unless her hearing aids were turned down!

I am grateful for having had the opportunity to share laughs and conversations with Olga.  She was definitely one "cool old lady" and will be missed.

I didn't know Olga very well, I remember how impressed I was that she had kept up her reading.... That was inspiring. I loved hearing the Sunrider stories you told. 
You were everything and more as a loving daughter and son-in-law. I admired you both so much for your integrity. She was loved and cared for....Colleen

Olga was a beacon of light filled with love & joy. I loved watching her face as she told me the story of her visiting New York with Jane & Ruth. She had so much fun on the double-decker bus! I could tell she really appreciated her daughters. Then on her surprise 90th birthday party...she was glowing with a smile ear to ear all night long!! It brings my heart joy thinking of Olga. I will truly miss her.

Olga always had a smile.  She was one of the most loving and lovable people I've ever known.  I remember her often.

Knowing Olga was like being embraced by the sun.  You'd walk into her loving arms and all her joy and sunshine would envelop you.  And she always had more for the next person!  She brought light and joy to our lives.  There was never a time we saw her that we didn't realize how much we missed her.  Her loving good nature and quick smile are the first things that come to mind when we think of her.  And it's what we will always remember about her.

I always called her Mom when I saw her. She always had the biggest smile on her face for everyone. I called her on her last Birthday per Jane's wishes.  Jane knows best and I'm glad I called her.  Heaven is very excited to have her. She will be missed.

Olga was truly an inspiration to all. She was a delight to visit with and always brightened the spirits of everyone around her with happiness and joy we should all emulate in our lives. We always enjoyed seeing Olga.

I loved Olga's zest for life, traveling, adventures, and trying new things.  She always had a smile on her face and joy in her heart.  She was a beacon of light and will be missed by all.

"Olga Cruz she was a amazing Grandmother..."I miss her so much, she was one of the most strongest women I know, she was my idol. She would tell me stories about the good times and the hard times in her life.She was always so caring towards others and always said the truth no matter what.I remember this one time my Grandmother Olga was visiting us in Colorado and I was back living with my parents for a while after college. I invited my boyfriend at the time who by the way ended up to be my husband later to dinner that evening she said the funniest thing to me, she followed me into the kitchen after dinner and pinched me really hard and said" He is really cute don't mess this one up, he is a keeper" I will remember that moment forever. I will miss u and love u grandma forever !!!!

Oh Olga,
 When I had the chance to see you I always left feeling better about myself, you made me feel special. I enjoyed engaging in conversation , there was never a subject or topic that you did not know  something about. This stimulated me encouraged me to continue to learn so when I saw you again I would have something valid to share.
You granted me courage to endure my personal trials for I watched you go through yours and you always came through being a better person.
Thank You for being you.

I loved Olga's spirit and friendly smile. I also respected her willingness to try new things and be one of the very few seniors to take my qigong/tai chi class offered in the community where she once lived... Thank you Olga for being such a good example for others to follow. My sincerest condolences to Jane and her family......

John Hines - Olga will be missed.  She was an awesome lady that had class and a lot of spunk.  She showed me that even when your health throws you a curve, you can fight back as she did.  I will miss her smiling face and her personality.  See you again someday Olga.

Olga was a huge inspiration to us.  We watched her go from barely being able to get out of a chair, to walking down the driveway with her walker, to strolling around the block without any assistance.  She was amazing.  We will miss her.

During our last few visits to and since moving to America I have gotten to know Olga as a loving grandmother and mother. I am very thankful that we had the chance to spend so much time with her in the last year. I know that Robert loves his grandma very much. She was such a happy, kind and funny person. She always surprised me with her little jokes and unexpected comments. I will never forget the day when Robert was waiting in the car and I was walking Grandma up to her apartment and she whispered to me like she was telling a secret: “You know, since Robert was a little boy he always liked special things. That's why he picked you!” That was so incredibly nice of her to say. Another time we two were alone she joked with me and said: “Take good care of Robert…or I'll crack your head.” I was laughing at that time, not sure what it meant. I asked Robert later what “crack your head” means. Surprised of what Grandma told me, we were both laughing very hard. We will miss Grandma and in the little time I knew here she earned a big space in my heart. I know that whoever thinks of her, has warm memories and a smile on their face.

Olga was one of the cheeriest people I've ever known, and I never saw her in anything but a really good mood. She told it like it is, a great trait, and I'm sorry she's gone. It was a pleasure to have known her.

Olga was the greatest mother-in-law a guy could have.  She was loving, caring, sweet, smart and never afraid to say what was on her mind.  Her spirit lives on in the hearts and minds of the many that knew her.  Olga was one of those people that made the Earth a better place for all.

Olga was a remarkable woman. She will be greatly missed. We loved her stories and jokes.

Olga was one of ourfavorite people of all acquaintances.  She was happy, friendly, and smiling all the time.  Even in her latter years, she traveled and enjoyed new sites, new people, and new adventures.  Harriet and I loved her like our own family.

Olga was such a special lady. We enjoyed our times spent with her at Jane and Cliff's home. She told the "best" stories...and always with a "wisdom-filled" smile. It was an inspiration to sit with her in Sunrider get-togethers, as she shared her health progress narratives. She was very proud of her advancements, and everyone was proud of her! So, Olga's time arrived to leave this earth and let her spirit soar. She now gets the opportunity to eternally and lovingly bless us all... and we get to receive the gift. May her family's memories of Olga be revered among the angels.

Olga was such a precious woman, I really enjoyed every time that I got to see her and visit with her.  We shared some nice lunches together and I will surely miss her.

Family:
We are not having a funeral. She's being cremated and did not want to be buried. We thought we'd have a little memorial for Olga when we all get together this summer for Sol's birthday. Many friends that Olga had are deceased and the family members are out of state, so we thought it would be easier for everyone to celebrate her life later when we could all be together.

Arizona friends: We will celebrate Olga's life when Cliff and I move back to Mesa in June.
