Randy was born on February 20, 1958, in Perham, Minnesota, to Alvin and Margaret (Bucholz) Mattfeld. He graduated from Perham High School in 1976 and went on to attend the University of Minnesota Crookston. Following his education, Randy began his career as a lab technician at the USDA Lab at Land O’Lakes in Perham. In 1983, he transferred to the Land O’Lakes Research and Development Facility in Arden Hills, Minnesota, where he worked as a research scientist until 1994. In 1994, Randy returned to Perham and purchased Strom’s Café, later renamed Lakes Café. For many years, he was a familiar face in the community, spending early mornings cooking breakfast for friends and neighbors. Alongside his partner, Rich Doll, Randy owned and operated Lakes Café until his retirement in 2021. In retirement, he continued to stay active, working part-time in the pro shop at Perham Lakeside Golf Course.
Randy was deeply committed to his community and took great pride in calling Perham home. He enjoyed bowling in the winter and golfing in the summer. Randy was actively involved in numerous organizations, including the Perham Kinship Program, Perham Rotary Club, and Perham Chamber of Commerce. He served multiple terms on the Board of Directors for Perham Lakeside Golf Course and held a term as President. In recognition of his dedication and service, Randy was honored with the Perham Chamber of Commerce Hall of Fame Award in 2022.
Randy married Margi Wolak in 1984, and together they raised two daughters, Kayla and Nicole. He was a devoted father, always present in his daughters’ lives—whether coaching them on the golf course or helping build sets for school musicals. He exemplified a strong work ethic, kindness, and a joyful spirit. On July 9, 2010, Randy married Lori Mack, the love of his life. Together, they built a close-knit blended family that meant everything to him. Randy and Lori shared many passions, including golfing, traveling, cooking, singing karaoke, spending time on Big Pine Lake, playing poker with family, and gathering with friends. “Randers” especially enjoyed his Tuesday golf outings with his buddies and the taco special at the Perham Lakeside Golf Course. Known for his quick wit and storytelling, Randy had a gift for making others smile and laugh wherever he went.
Randy is survived by his loving wife, Lori; his children, Kayla (Matt) Hagfors of Braham, Minnesota, Nicole Mattfeld of East Lansing, Michigan, Amanda Fjerstad of Oronoco, Minnesota, Luke (Kelly) Fjerstad of Byron, Minnesota, and Ben (Kristen) Fjerstad of Maricopa, Arizona; his grandchildren, Addie, Lila, Gabby, Hunter, Lauren, and Jonah; his sisters, Brenda (Chuck) Sprenger of Grey Eagle, Minnesota, and Sonia (Mike Specht) Strickland of Princeton, Minnesota; his father, Alvin Mattfeld of Perham, Minnesota; along with many dear family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his mother, Margaret Mattfeld.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, May 16, 2026, from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., followed by a funeral service at 2:00 p.m. at Calvary Lutheran Church in Perham. A Celebration of Life will follow at the Perham Lakeside Golf Course.
