Roger was the youngest of three sons of the late Raymond F. Carlin Sr. and the late Clara W. Carlin (nee Siebert). He was predeceased by his brothers Raymond F. Carlin, Jr., and Rodney S. Carlin. Roger was also a beloved uncle, great-uncle, and great-grand uncle to 21 nieces and nephews.
Raised and educated in Philadelphia, PA., Roger graduated from Northeast High School where he played varsity soccer for the Vikings. Following graduation, he served with honor in the United States Marine Corps from 1963 to 1979 as both an A-4 fighter pilot and a helicopter pilot, forever embracing the title “Captain of the Marines.” Following his military service, he brought the same commitment and excellence to his civilian career, serving as Director of Certification at Hughes, Boeing, and MD Helicopters.
In retirement, he was rarely seen without his beloved companion, Crystal, a fluffy and endlessly friendly Samoyed. Together, they were a familiar sight in the neighborhood, greeting everyone warmly on their walks. Beyond that, the pair brought comfort and smiles to patients and families in Mesa medical centers through their volunteer dog-visiting programs. Whether he was with family, at neighborhood gatherings or at work, Roger will be fondly remembered for his kindness, generosity, and gift for connection. Roger had a remarkable ability to engage in meaningful conversations, leaving a lasting impact on all who knew him. His warm presence and compassionate spirit brightened lives not only in Mesa, but across the world.
Although he never gave up cheering for the Raiders, Roger was also an avid Arizona Cardinals and Diamondbacks fan, taking great joy in witnessing both teams reach the Super Bowl and World Series.
A memorial service will be held at a later date, with details to be shared on the Mariposa Gardens Memorial Park website. In accordance with Roger’s wishes, his ashes will be scattered in a private ceremony.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Roger’s memory to causes that reflect his lifelong dedication to veterans and his love for animals:
• Semper Fi & America’s Fund
• Paws of Honor
