Shirley was born in Bottineau, ND on May 18, 1933 to Gladys and Anton Johansen. She attended Hesper School and later married Raymond Hoffner on November 7, 1949 in Esmond, ND. They settled northeast of Esmond where they farmed and raised their family.

Shirley lived on the farm until 1986 where she worked side-by-side with Raymond. In 2005 she moved to Mesa, AZ where she lived for the remainder of her years. In her younger years Shirley loved horseback riding with her friend, gardening with her sister-in-law, she loved her Birthday Club and bowling with her friends. Shirley loved spending time with her family and was very active in all her children’s activities and events. In her later years it went from her children’s activities and events to her grandchildren’s and great grandchildren’s events and activities, from football, baseball, basketball, to volleyball and horse shows. Very few events took place without Grandma Shirley in the crowd cheering.
