Dr. Steven Douglas Womack of Warsaw, Indiana, passed away on the evening of January 18, surrounded by the love of his family. He leaves behind a life defined by intellect, imagination, faith, and an unwavering commitment to family. He was an amalgamation of imagination, fascination and well-timed, one liners of his signature dry humor. Making sure to never miss any event for his children to whatever lengths he could, whether he was traveling for work or was hindered by his health, he would show up to the concerts, games, meets, being one of the loudest voices of support.
Born on June 16, 1952, Steven is survived by his mother, Rowena; his siblings, Diane (Guy), Bob (Karen), Tom, Jon, and Jerry; and his cherished nieces and nephews.
A lifelong scholar, Dr. Womack earned his bachelor’s degree from DePauw University and his master’s degree and Ph.D. in history from Ball State University, a field that reflected his deep curiosity about humanity, tradition, and the stories that connect generations.
Over a long career, he taught at colleges and universities in Indiana, Massachusetts, Wyoming, Arizona, and Tennessee, and for many years taught Sunday school at Highland Park Community Church in Wyoming. Teaching was one of his greatest joys, and friends and family were often treated to spontaneous lectures on a wide range of topics.
His curiosity extended beyond academia, fueling a love of travel and exploration of both this world and those he imagined as a published science fiction author inspired by Star Trek. An engaging storyteller, he passed his love of literature on to his children.
A proud father, he is survived by his stepdaughter, Melissa (Neer), and their five children; his sons, Steven (Bridget) and Shawn (MacKenzie); and his daughter, Stefanie (Dean), who were central to his life and legacy. He is also survived by his former wife of 34 years, Debi, with whom he owned and operated a pioneering online publishing company, championing creative voices and instilling the values of hard work and creativity in their children.
He was an avid collector with a love for Americana, especially Coca-Cola and baseball (Go, Yankees!). He found joy in the music of the Beatles, often singing along, and held a deep affection for animals of all kinds—reflecting his loyalty and generosity toward all God’s creatures.
Steven D. Womack will be remembered as a devoted father, scholar, writer, entrepreneur, and a man who lived unapologetically on his own terms. His stories—both written and lived—will continue to be told by those who knew and loved him.
