

Mr. Jerry D. Young, age 85, entered into rest on January 23, 2017 in Mesquite, Texas. He was born on February 2, 1931 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma to parents Frank and Ruth Young. Jerry was raised in Oklahoma, graduated from Oklahoma Baptist University in 1954, and then graduated from the University of North Texas in 1968. He married Barbara Schuerhoff in 1951 and the couple had four children. He was an Educator in Public Schools, specifically a college instructor at El Centro Community College. He also taught at Ardmore High School, Sherman High School, Honey Grove High School and he was part of the Kaufman ISD Administration. His career in Education lasted 37 wonderful years. In his spare time, Jerry enjoyed storytelling, educating young minds, acting and writing. His family and friends knew him as an avid storyteller. Jerry was the President and Treasurer of the Tejas Storytelling Association and was honored with the John Henry Faulk Award and also the Excellence in Teaching Award from El Centro College in Dallas in 1998. He is preceded in death by his parents Frank and Ruth Young and his sister Ruth Lee Hannum. Jerry is survived by his wife Barbara Young; his brother Dale Young of Tulsa, Oklahoma; his sister Sammie Harriott of Ardmore, Oklahoma; his sons Dwain and wife Rita of Sparks, Nevada, John and wife Kay of Telephone, Texas, and Darrel Young of Ardmore, Oklahoma; his daughter Martha and husband Ray of Burleson, Texas; eight grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. Visitation will take place at the Wilshire Baptist Church at 10:30 AM the morning of Friday, January 27, 2017. Services will be held at Wilshire Baptist Church at 11:00 AM on the morning of Friday, January 27, 2017 with a burial to follow at Restland Memorial Park in Dallas, Texas.
