Aunt Doris is in my first memories living with MoMo and Poppa.  My dad was in the air force in Dallas and we stayed with them while he was away.  The house was full with the grandparents, Teddy, Julie, Doris, my mom Nettie.  and Rosie and me.  I was three and I was  a cry baby.  Aunt Doris played with me and sang to me at night to help calm me down.  She also cut two of her cocktail dresses, as they were called then, to fit me so I could play dress up.  In later years, she was always there to pick me up at school when they made me go home because my skirt was too short or to take me to the doctors for whatever my current ailment.  I babysat her babies when I was in my teens.  I remember how beautiful she was at she prepared to go out with Uncle Ronnie.  She looked like Marilyn Monroe.  I adored her.  I will always remember her goodness and her laugh.  I will miss you Aunt Doris.

Aunt Doris was so young and pretty when I was growing up. I remember thinking it was so cool that she wore jeans and boots and she always had her hair and makeup done. 

My mama didn’t drive and I can remember Aunt Doris picking us up to go to the doctor on more than one occasion. Once, she brought me a teddy bear and it wasn’t even my birthday or anything. I couldn’t believe it! 

I didn’t get to spend as much time with Aunt Doris as I wish I had but I’m so grateful for the time we shared. I’ll miss her. ❤️

I was very close to Aunt Doris when I was little. She insisted I call her Darling Doris instead of Aunt Doris and she wouldn't answer me if I didn't. She was not too much older than me and I idolized her. She was so beautiful. She was fun. She took me everywhere with her, even on dates with Ronnie, though he wasn't too happy about it. She used to buy song magazines with the words to all the songs. She showed me where they were hidden so I could read them when I was at MoMo's. I promised not to tell anyone where they were so they would't get lost or torn. I could talk to her about anything and she gave me advice.  After I married, she would have us over every other Friday night  at the house on Bonnabel. We would have dinner and sit around talking and playing games when the kids went to bed. She was godmother to my oldest son. I have fond memories of the Wednesday lunch get togethers with all the aunt's and MoMo and Lucky. Each Aunt had a special dish she would prepare when it was her turn to be the hostess. I always looked forward to when it was Doris turn. She made such a great pot roast. For years I would to the Napoleon Room to play bingo with Doris, Elma, and my Mom, Shirley. Time passed. I moved out of town and I didn't get to see her much after that.  I will never forget the good times I had with her. I'll miss her. Rest in peace, Darling Doris.


 When I was growing up I always thought Aunt Doris was so pretty and so cool. In later years I saw how she worked so hard for her family.   She and Uncle Ronnie had good times too. I loved her smile and her laugh. She was a great godmother to me. She never forgot my birthday or Christmas even into my 20s.  She loved her children and they loved her too. She’s up in heaven now singing with the family.

Miss Doris was our special 2nd mom in the Helios Bonnabel neighborhood.  We enjoyed long moments of laughter in the sunny backyard or under the shaded driveway porch.  We listened to the radio, harvested hundreds of China ball berries, ate watermelon and peeled oranges.  We spent hours on the swing set and climbed trees. Miss Doris was always there watching us kids of our precious neighborhood. She gave us an enchanted childhood . We love you eternally. Ever since we all met in early 1960.  Love Lynn, Lauren and Retsie!
