Ethel Jane Istre

Ethel Jane Istre, entered into eternal rest on Monday, October 4, 2021 at 1:47 AM. Age 84 years, a native of Gueydan, LA and a resident of New Orleans, LA for 25 years and Folsom, LA for the past 33 years.

Beloved daughter of the late Alphonse and Olivia Lavergne Istre. Loving sister of the late Mary Ruby Istre LaPoint, and Andrew Wilfred Istre. Godmother of Janet Touchet LeJeune, Alisha, Linda, and Catherine Istre. Also survived by nieces, cousins, other relatives and many many dear friends.

Ethel was a lifelong educator, teacher, and mentor. Upon graduation from the University of Southwest Louisiana (present day-University of Louisiana at Lafayette) in 1958 she began her teaching career at Mt. Carmel Academy in New Orleans where she taught for 3 years until she joined the New Orleans Public School System and taught at John McDonald Senior High School, Martin Behrman High School, and O. Perry Walker High School in Algiers where she retired from in 1990. During that time, she also taught Adult Basic Education (ABE) and General Educational Development (GED) from 1965 to 1990. After retirement, she became very active in her church at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Folsom, LA where she was the Director of Religious Education for 16 years, in addition to becoming an active and invested member of their Bereavement Group.

Relatives and friends of the family and all her former students she cherished thru her lifetime of teaching are invited to attend a Memorial Mass at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church Jonathan Hall, 11345 St. John Church Road, Folsom, LA on Saturday October 16, 2021 at 11:00 AM with Father Vincent Phan officiating. Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM at the church. Ethel’s final wishes were to be inurned at the Gueydan Cemetery in Gueydan, LA next to her loving Mother and Father.
