Judge Porteous was a great guy with the best sense of humor.  He was smart as a whip and a terrific judge.

Your Honor, thank you for being an incredible influence on me years ago at Dominican College.  You were one of the best instructors ever who always had time for your students.  Thanks for your friendship and legal mentoring.  My prayers and condolences to the Porteous Family.

Every time I think of him, I smile. “Papa Porteous” was the gentleman I am sure many would aspire to be: Generous, smart, kind, caring, and oh, so funny…! Every moment with him made you feel like you were the only person in the room -and to him at that moment, you were. 

I am grateful and blessed to have known him, and will forever keep him in my heart. 

To his beautiful family: My deepest condolences and warmest hugs.

In memory of Tom Porteous,

Before I moved too far away, there were the many good times spent together sailing, hunting, visiting great restaurants, attending LSU games, and the occasions that we tried cases together.   Rarely have I come across another with such a great sense of good humor, devotion to family and love for life.  Tom, of course, was one of a kind and will be rightfully missed by many.

As a newly-minted US Magistrate Judge in Lafayette, I had dinner with Judge Porteous and several other Judges and lawyers in Baton Rouge in 2002 or 2003 after we had all taught litigation techniques at LSU Law School. After dinner, Judge Porteous took me aside and talked to me about my new career. He told me that after spending some time with me he was sure that I would be a good Judge, fair, and retain my humility while on the Bench. I never forgot that conversation and tried to do both during my 14 years on the Federal Bench. Judge Porteous did not have to take the time to encourage me. He sat in New Orleans and I sat in Lafayette. When we saw each other he never failed to talk and joke with me. I came to understand that he was a gracious and generous man, and that his generosity with me was just his character. I never personally told him how grateful I was to him for those few minutes; I greatly regret that.

Rest In Peace my friend.

We have lost a great man and a great friend. I am sad having lost my friend and send my condolences to all of his family. 

On behalf of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart Alumni Association and Brother Martin High School, I offer our prayers and condolences.  We will say a Mass in his memory.

Father of all, we pray to you for Tom,  all those we love but see no longer. Grant to them eternal rest. Let light perpetual shine upon them. May his soul and the souls of all the departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.

Michael, Timmy, Tommy and Catherine,

There are so many memories and fun times that come to mind  - from going to see haunted houses in “the van”, to beach trips, countless parades, and many holidays to name a few. Then, I had the honor and privilege to work with your Dad for three years before moving.  I am ever grateful for that opportunity and the time I had to learn from him and grow as an attorney. We all know what a great man he was, and with each of you, I will hold on to all the wonderful memories of him. Love and prayers to you!  Kristie

We are sending love, hugs and prayers to you all today and always.  Uncle Tommy was an incredible man that loved his family so much. He always had a huge smile on his face when he spoke of you or his beautiful grandchildren because he was so proud of you all.  May the beautiful memories that you have carry you through the difficult road ahead.  And may God wrap his loving arms around you and your family, holding you close filling your hearts peace.  Uncle Tommy will remain forever in our hearts and always in our thoughts.   We love you and are here if you need anything.
