Guy Edwin Murphy, Jr., known affectionately by family and friends as “G.E.”, entered into the Kingdom of Heaven on Saturday, December 22, 2012. The son of the late Guy E. Murphy, Sr. and Tressie E. “Penny” Doss Murphy, Mr. Murphy was born in Roanoke, Virginia in 1917 and had resided in Louisiana since 1972. He is preceded in death by his brother William (Bill) Murphy and Bessie Murphy-Bailey. Mr. Murphy has two living siblings; James H. Murphy (the late Audrey) and June R. (Rita) Murphy-Zimmerman (the late Robert) of Roanoke, VA.
The family he has left behind to cherish his memory are his wife of 43 years, Mary E. Griffin Murphy; his children, Gerald E. Murphy (Bonnie) of Meadville, PA, Robert T. Walker (Gaynell) of Kenner, Rosemary G. Walker-Chauvin (John) of La Place, Guy E. Murphy, III (Alexis) of Metairie and Julie E. Murphy-Rico (Brad) of Kenner. He is also survived by his grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and great-grandchildren.
He will be remembered as a kind, loving man who worked hard as an independent businessman of nearly 60 years in financing and credit acceptance. Mr. Murphy was a former President of the Brotherhood at Williams Blvd. Baptist Church and he had a keen interest in history, travel and an undoubted love for Cadillacs. He also served the U.S. government during WWII as an engineer for the Erie Railroad, shuttling servicemen and supplies throughout the Eastern United States. We will forever remember him as a loving father, husband, brother and a friend to all that met him. He will also be remembered for his business slogan of many years; “It’s nice to be important, but it’s more important to be nice.
A memorial gathering for Mr. Murphy will be held at Leitz-Eagan Funeral Home, 4747 Veterans Blvd., near Clearview Pkwy., in Metairie, LA on Saturday, January 5, 2013 beginning at 11:00 AM with a memorial service to follow at 1:00 PM in Leitz-Eagan Funeral Home’s chapel.
