Jean Claude was the oldest of 7 kids in a tight-knit, loving family. Jean Claude discovered his passion at 8 years old in cooking food through the support of his paternal grandfather (Gaston Berlin) who had a firm hand in his upbringing. His talented hands brought him many opportunities as he traveled through France. Showcasing elaborate and elegant food, fruit and cheese tables. He lived most of his life in France where he had three beautiful daughters: Christine Matherne, Laurence Berlin and Jessica Estrada. He moved to New Orleans, Louisiana later in life where he would meet the love of his life Maria Berlin and shared four children with her; César López, Flor Robertson, Wendy López and Jean Claude Berlin Jr. He spent most of his career working for Hotel Intercontinental cooking for guests from all over the world. He also worked with Capdeboscq Catering where he worked on the side of his best friend Frank Capdeboscq and an array of people he grew to love as a second family.
Jean Claude spent most of his teenage and early adult life in the French Alps and loved telling the stories of his adventures there to his grandkids Landon, Mikey, Lenox, Paxton and Aaliyah in his last weeks. He also shared his favorite hobby of gardening with them. His garden was a place he loved to be with his grandchildren and hoped to plant the seed in them to love it just as much. He could be found having water fights with them there on a random Saturday. Jean Claude Sr’s youngest son (Jean Claude Berlin Jr) gave birth to a baby named in his honor, Jean Claude Adonis Berlin who passed away in April 2021 at the tender age of 1. Jean Claude was eager to make his way to heaven to be with his last angel grandchild and on July 5, 2021 he made his way there. We know he is happily bouncing him in arms today. He leaves behind a grieving wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Two brothers, four sisters and a host of nephews and nieces. Jean Claude touched the lives of many people through his kindness and his food and we invite you to celebrate his home going with us. Jean Claude has chosen to rest in the French Alps where his family will travel to lay him to rest.
