Jean was born in Charleston, West Virginia, and is the only daughter of Richard and Mary Ann Long. She moved to Kenner her senior year of high school, graduating from Mid-City Baptist High School in 1969. She received her BA from Stetson University, where she created and captained the brand-new majorette team. Jean was an educator for 47 years. She valued school and constantly sought to expand her own education. Throughout her life, she earned seven Masters degrees and a PhD.
Jean was an accomplished traveler who traveled all over the world, from Austria to Egypt, and even lived in France as a teen. Jean was just as well-traveled domestically, having visited almost every state in the US. In 2019, she took her eldest daughter and grandchildren on a two month cross-country road trip exploring the country.
Jean was an avid celebrator of any and every holiday. From her handmade cemeteries at Halloween to making everything jingle at Christmas, Jean lived by the motto, “when you think there are too many decorations, add a little more.” Jean was also very active in Mardi Gras. She was a member of the Krewe of King Arthur, Tucks, and Neophermenos, where she served as a Maid, Captain, and Queen throughout the years.
Jean is survived by her son, Richard Pinney; her daughters, Vanessa Brunet and Tiffany Kneip; her three grandchildren, Alexis Brunet, Hadley Brunet, and Anders Pinney; and her many chosen family members who called her their “second mom”.
Jean loved glitter and has requested that all guests at her funeral wear something that sparkles. She has requested that her life be celebrated with color and shine. She very firmly exclaimed “No black! Unless it glitters!”
While flowers are always welcome, you may also consider donating to The Lustgarten Foundation, to aid in funding pancreatic cancer research.
