It is with great sadness, we announce the passing of our beloved Jerome George Taranto, who left us on January 16, 2024 at the age of 53. Jerome was born on January 25, 1970, the first child of Pamela Ann Taranto (Junot) and Anthony George Taranto, Jr. in New Orleans.
He attended St. James Major Elementary New Orleans, St. Pius X Catholic School and was a proud graduate of Holy Cross High School (Class of 1989). His ever-protective nature and unwavering willingness to protect those he loved was one of Jerome’s most cherished characteristics. Many who knew him witnessed Jerome take on bullies and extend a helping hand to those they bullied.
In 1994, he earned his Associate of Science degree in Radiologic Technology and, after further study, was certified as a Licensed Radiation Therapy Technologist. During this time, Jerome also thankfully discovered a sanctioned outlet for his skills, via which he distinguished himself in the ring as a Golden Gloves boxer.
For close to twenty years, Jerome practiced as a Radiation Therapist and Radiographer, including ten years at Charity Hospital prior to Hurricane Katrina and most recently treating patients at the Louisiana State Penitentiary.
With a magnetic personality and gift for gab, Jerome could also sell just about anything to anyone. He excelled in medical sales and with Custom Furniture, a family owned business in which he became part owner.
Most of all, Jerome loved and adored his family and friends. He was a dedicated and loyal father, son, brother, uncle and friend. He was passionate about food, football, his faith, health and wellness and all things Italian. Most importantly, he connected effortlessly with people from all walks of life.
There’s not enough ink to describe the impressionable imprint he made on this Earth. Those lucky to be in his orbit, couldn’t help but smile at his animated voice, endless energy, infectious enthusiasm and the warmth of his charm. He had a smile that lit up the room, the most genuine heart and an unforgettable laugh. To know Jerome was to love him. And, to be loved by him felt like the greatest gift. He will be missed beyond words.
Jerome is preceded in death by his father, Anthony George Taranto Jr. He is survived by his beloved daughter Gianna Marie Taranto, mother Pamela Ann Taranto (Junot), sister Gena Taranto (Robin), half-brother Anthony Taranto, III, nephew Chance Robin and former wife Wendy Guidry (Taranto), as well as a large number of loving family members and friends.
A Funeral Mass will be held in his honor at St. Dominic Catholic Church, 775 Harrison Avenue, New Orleans on Thursday, February 8, 2024 beginning at 12:30 PM with Fr. Doug Busch officiating. Visitation is 10:00 AM -12:30 PM. Private interment to follow.
In lieu of flowers, kindly consider making a donation in Jerome’s memory to St. Tammany Outreach for the Prevention of Suicide (STOPS) at www.stops-la.com, or, better still, at the family’s request, please write a note to share your fondest memories about Jerome that will collectively bring him vividly to life for years to come.
