

José Cándido Luna, age 93, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving family on Thursday, January 1, 2026. He was born on November 30, 1932, in Pasaco, Guatemala, to Mónico and Refugio Túchez de Luna, and was the youngest of twelve children.
José Cándido earned a master’s degree in pedagogy and educational sciences from the University of San Carlos in Guatemala City. He devoted his life to education, teaching college and vocational students with passion and dedication. He also had a deep commitment to serving individuals with visual and hearing impairments, working tirelessly to enlighten and empower the blind and deaf-mute.
In 1987, he relocated to Kenner, Louisiana, with his beloved wife of 63 years, Carmen Quiles Luna. Together, they built a life rooted in faith and service to the Lord. Affectionately known as Don Cándido by family and friends, he was a devoted deacon and faithful member of La Viña Baptist Church.
He is survived by his loving wife, Carmen Luna Quiles; his five children: Edgar Armando Luna (Lucrecia Luna), Brenda Luna, Luthgarda Luna, Criseida Luna Gomez (Santos Geovany Gomez), and Mónica Luna Hernández (Ghian Carlos Hernandez) and his cherished grandchildren: Edgar Estuardo Luna (Ivy Luna), Maria José Céspedes (Marlon Céspedes), Deborah Luna Trimpe (Nick Trimpe), José David Ibarra, José Gabriel Luna (Britney Luna), Ismael Jonathan Gomez (Katie Gomez), Sarah Elizabeth Gomez, Giancarlo Hernández, Enzo Paolo Hernández, and Giuliana Hernández.
He is also survived by his great-grandchildren: Elijah Céspedes, Alani Céspedes, Abigail Trimpe, Benjamin Trimpe, Jett Santiago Luna, and Valyn Sofia Luna.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, January 17, 2026, from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm at Leitz-Eagan Funeral Home, 4747 Veterans Memorial Boulevard in Metairie, Louisiana, 70006. A Memorial Service will be held at 3:00 pm.
