Michelle C. Shearer, age 68, passed away peacefully on the afternoon of March 29th, 2026, at Ochsner Hospital in Jefferson parish. She fought a long and courageous battle with liver disease, inspiring all who knew her with her strength, patience, humor, and enduring love.
Michelle was born in Coco Solo, Panama on June 3, 1957, while her parents were serving in the military. After her parents’ divorce, she was raised by her mother, LaJeane, and immigrated with her family to Scottsdale, Arizona, where she enjoyed happy teenage years with her siblings.
Michelle’s professional life was as dynamic as it was impressive. After several early career moves, she became a formidable stock trader, working in New York, Dallas, and Houston. Driven by a deep curiosity and love of learning, she later returned to school and earned her Bachelor of Science in Geology from the University of Georgia. She continued her studies at Rice University, working toward her PhD; however, her dissertation was tragically lost during Hurricane Katrina.
In 2004, Michelle made New Orleans her home, where she worked as a geologist for the federal government, supporting offshore oil and gas administration. She remained dedicated to her work in this role until her passing.
Michelle had a deep love for cats and shared her life with many beloved feline companions over the years. She also found joy in cooking, watching cooking shows, and relaxing with movies. In her later years, one of her greatest simple pleasures was surfing the web for cat memes and videos, which never failed to bring her laughter.
She is survived by her sister, Yvette Renee. She was preceded in death by her mother, LaJeane; her father, James Alonzo; and her brothers, Steven David and James Michael.
Michelle’s final year was especially blessed by the close presence and support of dear friends, including Howard and Gertrude, Patrick and Francie, and Paul and Patty, whose companionship brought her great comfort and joy.
Michelle was deeply loved by her family and friends and will be profoundly missed. We take comfort in knowing her suffering has ended and that she is now at rest, her sharp mind and independent spirit leaving a lasting imprint on all who knew her.
A Celebration of Life Gathering will be held at Leitz-Eagan Funeral Home, 4747 Veterans Memorial Boulevard, Metairie, Louisiana 70006, on April 29, 2026, from 9:00 am to 11:00 am.
