

Steven Eugene Abels passed away on Friday, June 21, 2024 in Metairie, Louisiana. He was was born in Clarion, Iowa on July 10, 1948 to Eugene Raymond Abels and Dorothy May Losh Abels. The family moved from the farm in Wright County, Iowa in 1962 to Eagle Grove, Iowa. He attended Corwith School through the third grade, Kanawha Christian School through eighth grade, and graduated from Eagle Grove Community High School in 1966. He served in the United States Air Force 1968-1972. He attended Iowa Central Junior College in Eagle Grove, then the University of Iowa in Iowa City graduating in 1980 with a BA in East Asian Languages and Literature. He worked for United China and Glass Company in New Orleans, Louisiana until it closed, and worked for Interstate Collection Bureau in Metairie, Louisiana 1988-2013. He discovered true happiness when he married Maureen Therese Brennan of Metairie, Louisiana on November 10, 2000. He attended Wright Christian Reformed Church in rural Wright County, Iowa, then Samuel Lutheran Church in Eagle Grove, Iowa, then became a member of St. Christopher the Martyr Catholic Church in Metairie, Louisiana. He was predeceased by his parents, dear brother-in-law Larry Christopher (Patricia Abels), and dear sister-in-law Linda Sorenson Abels (Paul Abels). He is survived by his spouse, Maureen; sister, Patricia Christopher; brothers, Paul Abels and Philip Abels (Patty Schultz), and many nephews, nieces and grandnephews and grandnieces. Steve wishes to express sincere and special appreciation and gratitude to his classmates of the class of 1966 of Eagle Grove High School for their friendship, and to the family of his spouse Maureen for their support and friendship. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the visitation at St. Christopher the Martyr Catholic Church, 3900 Derbigny Street, Metairie, Louisiana on Thursday, July 4, 2024 beginning at 10:30 AM with a Memorial Mass to follow at 12:30 PM. Interment will be in the Southeast Louisiana Veterans Cemetery in Slidell, Louisiana at a later date.
