Amira Adelfa Atherley was born on September 5, 1942 to Jose Guadalupe Aguilar and Adelfa Perez in Belize City, Belize. The 6th of 7 children, she is survived by her brother Gaspar and was predeceased by the remainder of her siblings. On September 14, 1963, Amira Atherley, then Amira Aguilar, was joined in holy matrimony to Cordell Joseph Atherley. This was the start of the Atherley Legacy that would stretch across many decades as well as several countries, such as Jamaica, Canada, Belize, and the United States. Having emigrated to Miami, Florida in 1985, Cubby (as she was affectionately known), as a single mom, courageously forged a path for her 5 children (Amira, Michelle, Joseph, Stephanie, and Vince) to have all the advantages and opportunities the United States had to offer.
As a graduate of St. Catherine’s Academy, Amira Atherley was an avid reader and extreme sports fanatic. Above all she dedicated her life to her children and loved them with a fireceness compared to no other. Cubby’s strong wit and sassy personality could best be seen when she spent time with her dear friends, Annie Dawson and Arlene Card. Nothing would keep these 3 ladies from the dance floor, especially when Cubby’s favorite song, Tiny Winey, would blast through the speakers.
Amira Atherley, or Grandma Cubby as she was affectionately called by her grandchildren, took the utmost pride and joy in caring for her grandbabies: Krista, Alejandra, Adam,Tyler, Nikki, Samantha, Kayla, Michael, Danielle, Ryan, Maya, Sedii, and Hailey. Grandma Cubby’s unconditional love for her grandchildren led her to be the daily caretaker of many of her grandchildren prior to them attending kindergarten. Over the years, she was able to share many stories, songs, recipes, and precious moments with her most beloved people—her grandchildren.
Cubby’s kindness, influence, and giving heart will live on in her children and grandchildren.
