Domingo Zoilo Alfonso fell asleep in the Lord on Sunday, October 13, 2024. He was born on December 20, 1936 in Havana, Cuba. During his early childhood he grew up in the small town of Máximo Gómez, Matanzas. He lived in Cárdenas in his teen years, studying at El Colegio La Progresiva. In 1952 his family moved to Havana, where he enrolled at the University of Havana at the young age of 16 to study Electrical Engineering. He married in 1959 and the young couple had one son a year later. The family fled to Miami as exiles in 1960. Because of the sporadic closures of the university during the Cuban Revolution, he had not been able to complete his degree; however, he enrolled at the University of Miami where he graduated in 1962. Together with his wife and child, the family subsequently moved to New Jersey, where he obtained his Master’s Degree at the Steven’s Institute of Technology in Hoboken. In 1966 the Alfonsos moved back to Miami, and Domingo began his 30-year career at Florida Power & Light (FPL). He was very dedicated to his profession; several years after retiring, he was honored by being included in the first group of employees to be inducted into the FPL Hall of Fame. Even more so, he was very dedicated to his family and friends; always with the disposition to help whenever and wherever there was a need. When his wife’s Alzheimer’s progressed to the point of her needing to be admitted to a nursing facility, he decided to move to the Palace Suites to be next door to her. He visited her on a daily basis, and became well loved and respected by the nursing home staff, as well as the staff and residents of the Palace Suites. His lifelong passion was learning, he was particularly interested in history and science, especially astrophysics. He is survived by his wife of 66 years Martha, son and daughter-in-law Rev. Fr. Gustavo Alfonso and Margarita, grandchildren David and Cecilia, sisters Juanita and Evita, and their families.
