My mother, Elizabeth Windsor, died on September 8, 2021, of COVID-19. Elizabeth suffered for 6 decades from severe schizophrenia, a disease that we are often too ashamed to speak about. That shame contributed to her poverty, inability to receive treatment, and even to a desire to be treated. But, like most of us, she was a person with dislikes and likes, love, and had a family. As one of us, she deserved more help and dignity from a world that shunned people with her condition. She was extremely intelligent and wanted to dedicate her life to teaching at a university level. Elizabeth was pursuing a Ph.D. in Spanish literature when the disease finally took enough of a toll on her mind to prevent her from finalizing her dissertation at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. My mother was also fiercely dedicated to being a good parent for as long as she was able. She is survived by her son, daughter-in-law, grandchildren, and cousins. In lieu of flowers, I kindly ask for a donation to the Brain and Behavioral Research Foundation in her name or in the name of anyone you know who suffers from a mental illness.

Most importantly, though, please help in any way possible those amongst us with a mental illness, even if it’s just acknowledging their humanity with your kindness.
A visitation for Elizabeth will be held Friday, September 17, 2021 from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM at Caballero Rivero Little Havana, 3344 SW 8TH ST, MIAMI, FL 33135. An entombment will occur Saturday, September 18, 2021 from 11:45 AM to 12:30 PM at Caballero Rivero Woodlawn Park North Cemetery in the Mausoleum, 3260 Sw 8Th St, Miami, Florida 33135.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.riverofuneralhomemiami.com for the Windsor family.
